Ammo and guide rod laser

Newbe here.
Recently purchased an XD-45 4" and must say I'm very pleased.

Two items of interest:

Ammo, I'm currently using Winchester white box for range use because it is the least expensive as far as over the counter retail (Wally World, $29). Any suggestions on other ammo? I see Wolf is less expensive via the Internet. Anyone have any experience with Wolf ammo? What about a self defense round?

Guide rod laser, I'm looking at a LaserMax. Anyone have any experience with these or any other brand? My concern is long term use in a .45. Rather jarring experience so close so many times might be destructive. How does its spring compare to the stock spring?

TIA

dlw3, congrats on your recent purchase and welcome to G&G. I use the WWB ammo from wally world all the time. I also use Remington UMC, and American Eagle. As for self defense rounds go I have a few that I like. Federal Hydra-Shok, Winchester Ranger SXT, and Remington Golden Saber. I have never used wolf ammunition for one simple reason, the steel case. Steel have a higher likelyhood of causing premature wear/damage to components such as extractors/ejectors. The slight offset in price isn't enough for me to risk it.

LaserMax makes a fine laser sight. I have one in my Glock 23 .40cal. Works very well. Accuracy is within the 2" at 25yrds that the company claims, depending on the ammunition. I have found that the WWB ammo works best for target shooting through the Glock. The springs should be the same as the stock springs. The lasers have a 3 year replacement warranty so if anything should go wrong, they will either fix it or replace it free of charge. The guide rod is simply a guide, most of the "jarring experience" that you speak of is absorbed by the recoil spring, the slide stops, and your hand, the guide rod itself doesn't take much of a hit at all.

I've read that about steel and wasn't aware that Wolf had steel casings. I also heard not to use aluminum casings.

Thanks for replying.

Some people make a big deal about the laser guide rods voiding the manufactures warranty. My brother is a cop w/ a dept. issued weapon and can not use it for that reason. Although the dept. doesn’t care if their officers use remanufactured ammo, go figure. Just something to keep in mind.

Congrats on your new purchase. I am really starting to like those XDs.

I would use Wolf ammo without a second thought. Those XDs are tough Mofos.

Does changing the guide rod spring void the warranty? Many people do.
If not, why would a laser guide rod?

I'll see if I can find out from Springfield Armory.

Wolf ammo is generally ok (only used their brass casing)...The cost difference between "good" ammo and the steel case garbage wolf and prvi are putting out isn't worth the possibility of damage to your gun. Plus its dirty as hell

Why not just go with the Crimson Trace?

dlw3 - For whatever it may or may not be worth, I've been shooting my XD45 4" w/LaserMax rod guide laser sight on a weekly basis for just over a year with no problemos whatsoever. I detect no (before/after) mechanical differences as regards the installation of the laser sight. I shoot primarily 7'-25' & find that POA = POI. The XD/LaserMax combo gave me the precise results for which I was searching & I could not be more pleased except for the fact that red laser is not effective in bright outdoor lighting & LaserMax does not yet offer green in the rod guide application.

The red laser is on the way out. Everyone will be shifting to green. The guide rod might effect the warranty, but no one knows if you install it or not. Crimson trace is a great product. I would speculate that in the future, they come out with their "Emerald Trace" line, LOL !!

Green is brighter and shows up better in daylight.

Unfortunately, it also eats up the batteries way faster than a red one.

I just bought a Crimson Trace for my XD .40. I haven't had a chance to test her out yet but hope to soon. It appears to be sighted correctly based on how the instructions say to sight it against my wall. My 9 week old kitten loves to chase the laser around on the floor....

all the reasons listed for not using steel are valid. Another reason brass is preferable over steel is that brass, upon ignition, swells up to the chamber dimensions for that particular firearm. This swelling seals the breech so that all propellant gases move forward instead of leaking backward through the breech. Thus more consistent pressures, etc. leading to better accuracy and velocity.

Cheapest over the counter? It must be in your area because WWB is $20/100 rd box in our area. Also there are a lot cheaper brands like American Eagle for a 50 rd box is like $13 and Magtech is like $13 for a 50 rd. box.

Wal-Marts in FL sell Federal Target .45's for $17 but rarely have it in. Have to just keep checking. Where have you seen Magtech for $13? That's a great price.

Crimson Trace has their own forum and have had much discussion there about red vs. green. Right now, a green laser takes about twice the power of a red laser, and eats the batteries about twice as fast.

Not good when you are powered by a little silver oxide battery.
