well it is and it isn't, you have to learn how to drive in the snow, I've seen SUV's and trucks off the road, people think that four-wheel-drive is the greatest think in the world but its far easier to loose control with all four wheels going. I found that out last January when I went off the road in my blazer. for snow and ice 4WD isn't the greatest, now if you were going hunting in some muddy hayfield, yeah its good. that's my honest opinion.

We have always owned one 4X4 in the family because of the heavy snow belt we're in. Two wheel drive trucks don't cut it here, they're too light in the end.. You must put wieght in them to make them any better. The reason you see alot of SUV's and 4X4's off the road and in a ditch is people tend to overdrive their vehicles and their own abilities. They think because they have 4-wheel drive, they can go 75mph on hard packed snow or ice.. That ain't gonna happen!!! What do you mean by a locker??? If you mean constant 2-wheel drive, like a spool, then I wouldn't drive it in the winter.. You're going to lose it...And the term "4-wheel drive" is not entirely correct. When you're in "4-wheel drive" you actually have 1 front tire driving and the opposite rear tire driving. 4-wheel drive is great; you can stop better because of the rolling resistance of the front and rear driveshafts, and of course you can start better without alot of wheel spin.

Actually I sold one of my trucks today and the other is going to be shipped on the armys dime.

.22hustler yes thats kinda what I meant by locker. The locker is electronic so it works alot like limited slip minus the adjustment of power from one wheel to the other. Both wheels receive the same amount of torque regardless once the computer senses loss of traction. Having a spool would be wild ride in the snow around corners.

As for the 4x4 I would also have lockers installed so that I could have a "true" 4x4. The example you gave of the one front and one rear is with open diff right? Had plenty of "fun" times due to a 4x4 equipped like the 4x4 example you gave.

Question though why is 2wd lighter than 4wd in the rear?

Any how thanks for letting me know that a 4x4 is a good choice to have. I have been around places that they say you need a 4x4 to get around and a 2wd is more than enough. So I figure if the locals have had one in the family it is probably for a good reason. Guess when I come back from Afganistan I will pick up 4x4. Doubt will be much snow in Ny from june to august so I should be good till then.

As long as the wheels disengage going around corners, you should be all-right. I see you understand about "spools". Spools are bad for the street. They can lead to broken axles and that leads to bad things.. I was going to put a spool in my Nova,( cheap posi), but I can't bring myself to do it..I geuss I'm getting smarter as I get older...2-wheel drives in heavy snow just won't do it, dude... I had a El Camino, and a 76 1/2 ton, both 2-wheel drives. That was over 25 years ago, and haven't owned one since. No way.. I like the extra traction, and the "safe" factor.. I don't over-drive my truck and I know it's limits.. Many people do not, and they're the ones you see in a ditch. It's all about using that thing on your shoulders called a mellon!!! My buddy actually used his 2-wheel drive Dodge to TRY and pull his snowmobiles but that never worked of course, and he got rid of it that same winter. He drives nothing but 4-wheel drive Blazers or Wranglers now.I had a 81 4X4 Chevy with 230k on it when I sold it, and picked up a 96 Chevy 4X4. I have over 200k on it now..No problems with the drive-trains on either one, just the body rotting off,lol..

The two wheel drive and the four wheel trucks are probaly the same wieght in the back.. I should have said either one, (2 or 4), will be light, but when the 2-wheel drive gets stuck, you have the luxury of moving a button/lever, and just driving away...What branch of the service?? I was a 13A10, US Army, 1970-72, Field Artty.

You'll love NY.. Long guns are easy to buy, and winters aren't that bad. Small game is all over the place, and deer are plentiful.. I used to drive to the city, 55 miles round trip, and most of that was in the Lake Ontario snow-belt area. It can be VERY bad one minute, with the sun shining the next mile. Bad winters usually only last maybe 3 monthes, with snow that is, and the temps are tolerable.

If in oswego, tug hill or any place north east of Lake Ontario, you may want 4x4.
Also lower Onondaga county, north Cortland county you'd want it.

I am in the army and I do satellite communications, right now I work satcom on the tactical part of communications. Maybe someday I will get the cushy job that is non deployable and works like a 9-5 job.

ok since I am lazy and the internet is always full on half truths I have a quick question. Is the price of 4x4s inflated in NY? I know here in hawaii any truck that is quad cab is expensive and 4x4 is outrageous for the amount they jack up the price. Just trying to get an idea of what type of vehicles are priced higher than they should be.

good news. I think in hawaii they added gold to the 4x4 trucks or something ridiculous prices. Cant wait to go somewhere and not get ripped because they add the extra money for being shipped here. Just as a basis the new z06 corvettes were and are selling for about 30k more than one would buy in the mainland. 100 thousand when they first get here.
