K98 scope mount

I have a nice but unremarkable RC K98 that I need to scope. While I'm not trying to make it a repo sniper (wrong date and mfg), I would like to use either a Long side rail or short side rail. My question, is there a benefit of one over the other? Logically, it would seem that an LSR would offer more stability due to greater contact area but that's an assumption on my part.
Opinions please.

Thanks in advance

JohnC, I'm going through about the same thing, but on a 7mm Mauser. I've about settled on a "scout mount". Not for bench, but for deer hunting. I expect to spend about $130 for the mount, rings and scope, The scope will be the NcStar 2-7x32 pistol scope to get enough eye relief. The mount attaches over the rear Mauser "roller coaster" sight ramp, without drilling or tapping.

I've been looking at the accumounts and that's the question. LSR or short? Same price.

I am also interested...I would like to just get the mounts for the scope and go to walmart and pick a scope out..I don't want to spend $300 on the mounts either..Any suggestions?

Well I would be ok without using the stripper clips..Would you recommend one that is further down the barrel..I've never used a scope before and don't know about a scope that far from my eye.

If you have not used a scope before,I would defiantly go with a scout scope set up.Simmons makes a nice pistol scope for around $100.00.That is what I put on my 98,and it works great. The re-coil on the rifle is substantial, and having a scope that close to your eye, seeing how that you have not had experience with a scope, you would get a black eye real fast.

Call Howard or Sherry at S&K. Nice folks. I just ordered my Insta Mount("scout mount") which requires a long eye-relief scope because it is mounted down the barrel.

I also ordered (not from them) an NcStar 2-7x32 Extended Eye Relief scope, which S&K recommended. I figure the eye relief varies with the zoom (2-7) setting, so I will play with the zoom until I get the eye relief I want, then leave it set there like a fixed-power scope.

I paid a total of $131 for the mount and scope, including shipping and handling.

I sent S&K this image of my 7mm Spanish Mauser rear sight, just to be sure they send me the right Insta Mount. As I understand it, the original rear sight of my Spanish is both screwed on and soldered. This will make a solid mount for my S&K mount, I think.

I would go with the scout mount. XS Systems also has a Mauser scout mount. I have one like it on my Ruger M77MKII scout type rifle. You could also have the rifle drilled and tapped for regular scope mounts, see you local gunsmith.

Any particular one..I want one for windage and yardage..I would like to hit targets at 100 yards or 750yards(with practice and good settings of course). I would like a closer scope rather then down the barrel. What do you suggest...I was also told by a gunsmith that the clamp on scope rings are garbage and nothing but a headache.
