Kinda of a silly artical....but it left me and wifee poo woundering...what the heck is National Squirrel Awareness Week?????? I did not know squirrels had their own week....I mean vetrans only get a day....guess that one more think I missed on the old calender. Shocking End To Squirrel Awareness Week KENNEWICK, Wash. — If Kennewick residents forgot about National Squirrel Awareness Week, one critter made sure they remembered. About 1,700 customers lost electricity for about an hour Thursday because a squirrel got entangled in power equipment, causing a short circuit, said Karen Miller, a spokeswoman for the Benton County Public Utility District. She said the squirrel was probably seeking heat. Squirrels — singled out for recognition in the second week of October — are the utility's leading cause of outages, despite shields, squawking devices that that mimic calls of predators and other efforts. You know, when they cross those 7 kV transmission lines, it turns them inside out. I had one do that at 2:30 am a few years back in a house we'd just moved into at the time, and the bang from him popping like a popcorn kernel made me jump outta bed and grab my 45. Here in Kennewick along with the rest of the state, squirrels are now an endangered species and we are forbidden to hunt them. I guess the PUDs gonna have to do something to protect the little furballs or risk getting sued by the tree huggers. Losing power due to rambunctious squirrels is a fairly common occurence around here, what with all the tree that were planted right under power lines, and vice versa. What's really exciting is when one of those big horned owls brushes his wingtips against the hardlines at the substations. That's usually enough to smoke a transformer, not to mention fricasseed owl parts. Did you know that owls burn green when they get enough juice?
