I need to figure something out for my wife and 15 month old child. I throws a wrench in things when you have to think about what to take with a small child.

sea chicken1 i understand where your coming from... my wife and i foster so we can have little ones running around the house at anytime...one big thing make sure your wife is onboard with all of this and that she understands why you are doing what you do.
this is what we do for babies or little kids:
- go to the second hand store and pick up 5 sets of clothe that are 6 month bigger and a 5 sets that are up to a year bigger...
- if still using diapers either buy an extra bag, the smaller bags, everytime you get new diapers and get the ones that are a size bigger and stick into a tote. then as the baby grows into the new size repeat the process with bigger sized diapers, so on and so forth...
- at 15 month the baby should be eating the same foods that the grown ups do so all we would need to do is mush everything or gring everything(like meats)...
- STUFFIES & A BLANKET, if you through a few small stuffies and a cartoon style blanket in th pack as well it will go better for the babies, if there are todlers or little kids coloring books with colored pencils(not crayons they melt) and a pad of drawing paper will keep them busy...
-toiletries... hand sanitizer, roll of teepee or box of cleanex(?), any toothbrushes and toothpastes, butt-wet-whipes for babies are good for everything-hands, faces, underarms and otherplaces...
my wife:
- same style of b-o-b that i have except not as much ammo...
- toiletries... same as mine but she has tampons and some girlie stuff...
- our big firstaid/trauma kit... my wife was an emt and still goes over stuff to keep it fresh in her mind...
- pictures of family... its amazing how pics can sooth a woman
...uh, cant think of anything else at this time, good luck on getting things organized. i hope this helps or gets you started... keep us posted of the progress or what you have...

Yes you could have a bag for everything...my plan is to get home..that is where I "geo'd" all my stuff...that's where I make my stand....so my bag is a get me home bag. Since I'm self employed, I have no trouble keeping my gear with me.
There are some basic things that most everyone needs, food, water, shelter, I call comfort items, then some basic medical items and then safety. Depending on the size of your bag and the length of time you plan on needing it...will determine exactly how much gear you can carry. There should be a BOB for each person...you can vary some items but the basics are needed by everyone.
The yellow bottle is a water purifier.
3600 calorie ( 3 day ) food ration
Mine is set up for three days...it's really a "get me home bag".
Mine travels with a .45 and two magazines and
M1 .30 Carbine with two 30 round magazines.
Yea, that is a harmonica.... and a few oz. of silver.
The bag is a Maxpedition Colossus....and boy it's packed full.

Yeah, Ivan, his stuff is great but I have to make do with whatever I can afford to buy. Money is very tight.

I have been adding to my cache for some years now. I just keep picking up stuff as I go. Rotating and replacing consumables, and watching out for newer/better gear.

Just this past weekend I picked up a roofing hatchet (broadhead-style blade, built-in claws, and square hammer head on the back of the blade) that will go into my BOB as soon as I rig a sheath for it. Got it as part of a pile of stuff at the estate sale for which I paid a lump sum, so for practical purposes it was free. I kind of hate retiring the hatchet I carried in the Boy Scouts whose vices and virtues I know, but this one is more practical for survival use. That, in the end, is the deciding factor.
I'm also thinking about getting some of the new Aquila Super-Heavy .22LR rounds to add to the BOB. They're 45 grains bullets vs 40 grains. I need to test them before I do that, to see how the AR-7 likes them.

I do have some stuff, but mostly I just buy ammo. I figure if I can't trade the ammo for what I need, I can use it to 'get' what I need.

You might want to try some 60gr subs as well. Probably won't cycle the rifle, but they're nasty !!

I think it's one of those most essential items...
...a don't plan on doing well when trouble hits without it item.
In my neighborhood/community they're referred to as 72-hour kits...
...and they're a popular part of personal/family preparedness discussions and activities.

What was it he pulled out after the flashlight? I couldn't make out what he said. He said I'd know what it was and what it was for...I didn't.

I think you're talking about the space blanket or emergency blanket. They are found at any wal=mart or other big box store. It's a heavy foil blanket that folds into a little package with almost no weight. The foil traps your body heat, it is also waterproof, so it can be used as a temporary mini-tarp. There's also a military version of this blanket, more durable than the thinner versions at big-box outlets, that can be obtained via the Internet or from an Army Surplus store...
...and, my wife and I purchased a box of six that we divided up to use in our 72-hour kits.
