does anyone know where i can find black talon ammo. a friend was telling me about black talon ammo befoere he went to iraq. he said it would leave bigger entrance and exit holes. i was thinking this would make tracking deer easier. if you know any more about this ammo i would like to know as well. thanks
hate to burst your bubble but last I knew Black Talon was pulled off the market, renamed and is only avaible to LEO's. It was deemed to 'dangerous' by the media and doctors and Winchester fearing the bad pubilicity pulled it.

Any Black Talon is old now. They were known for the jacket peeling back and the peeled edges were sharp. There are some terrific bullets with great expansion if you push them to the right velocity. Speer 225 grains always gave me great expansion in wet sand near .900. The 45ACP is not a deer round, and most states would consider it improper, or illegal to hunt with.
^+1 Winchester SXT is the same round as the Black Talon, the coating has just been removed and the name changed. I am not familiar with the laws regarding hunting in your state, but I would have to venture a guess that it would be illegal to hunt big game with a semi-automatic handgun just as it is here. Plus, as M14man stated, the .45acp is not a deer round.
the gun im useing isnt a 1911 but it is a .45. i have a glock 21. i've had good lick with it so far using federal jhp i was just looking for something new to try. i guess ill try the sxt. thanks for the imfo.
I saw on AR 15.com forum what a black talon does to a hand. Apparantly the guy didn't check if his gun was empty before disassembling it to clean it. To get the slide off the glock you need to pull the trigger and push a slide release and his hand was in front of the barrel, but you already know this. His hand was mangled pretty good and the round produces some shrapnel when fired. I would stick with a standard hollow point for taking a deer, unless you like finding shrapnel. I also don't know if black talon will penetrate enough to take a deer. It will leave a huge entry hole, but it is designed as a home defense round not a big game round. I can't find it again so don't ask for a link, sorry. Who's idea was it to out the safety on the trigger? Just curious.
