I use sterilized baby food jars, then store in a bottom shelf cabinet. An attempt to keep a consistent temp and darkness. I have Begonia seeds from my Dad that are thirty years old, still viable.
With both Tomatoes and Cantaloupe, I save the seeds from the most robust plant that sets the earliest fruit. I start these the next year and I get a earlier harvest than store bought seeds.
I'm in Portland, OR, not the hottest climate for those two crops. I have been picking tomatoes by the 4tth of July and have vine ripe cants buy late Aug./early Sept. I start these early in the greenhouse and have them in raised beds by early May with a "wall of water". The wall of water keeps nigh temps from getting to low and allows the plants to set fruit.
Due to health issues I have cut way back on my gardening. About all I grow are tomatoes, peppers, onions, and a constant lettuce bed(I let the lettuce self seed)
