Can't get my MKII back together.

Good grief. I have had several of Bill Ruger's little sweetheart the .22 automatic. I've now got a Mark II and it only has 200 rounds thru it more or less. I cleaned it this morning and spent 50 minutes trying to reassemble it. I got to the point where you put the pin/latching mechanism up thru the receiver and the bolt. It just won't go. Any suggestions? Yes, I have the Ruger manual and the "easy procedure". I've done this procedure many times. Can't figure it out.

Point it down and pull the trigger to install the mainspring housing then point it up to close and latch it.

Yeah I had a Ruger .22 and loved it but reassembling was weird, sometimes it'd go back together instantly and sometimes I'd have to screw with it like you describe.

A new one do require a little wiggling and a lot of cussing.

Got it guys. I found some tiny burrs around the holes for the latch in the receiver, so I honed it down until smooth. I got it out awhile ago, in the light where I could see it, my eyes are getting bad on me, and finally with a lot of grunt I got the pin/latch in and then I got the short bolt syndrome, been there done that before, took it apart and got it dangling just right and click, she was back together. I had a buddy that had a Mark I, told me he figured it had close to 150,000 rounds thru it and was it a sweet shooting little pistol or what? I agree, I think this new one is just as tight as a banjo string, and will loosen up a little after I shoot it some more. Love the gun, but man, that reassemble can be a pain in the cazoo.

The more you do it the easier it gets.

That is exactly why I traded in my Ruger for a Browning Buck Mark.

I hear you gandog, but like I said, that Ruger will be still be shooting with my grandson's, grandson, and maybe his grandson too. That little pistol was made to last, and the more you shoot it, the better it gets.

The first time I took my MK III apart, I had to use a brass punch underneath that assembly to drive the bolt pin back in. Has gotten a lot easier on subsequent tries (I can now do it by hand) but those things are a bear to clean the first couple of times!

I have to refer to this page every time I do a MK pistol, and I've done dozens of them. Worth printing out.

The MKI was easy to reassemble. You just had to pull the trigger so the hammer was in the down position. The MKII is just a little trickyer. The hammer pivot will keep the mainspring housing from entering the frame because the mainspring housing hits the pivot. You have to pop the pivot up a little until it get in the right spot on the mainspring housing, then it drops right in. It took me two hours to figure that out but once you learn its no longer a problem. I used to work in a gunshop and people would bring in these guns all the time. Id just pop it together and they would say, " you blankhole! I worked on that for hours and got nowhere!"

Hi all, just found this thread. Ironically ran into the same issue yesterday morning. They are tough little buggers to put together; once I figured it out I took it apart and put it together again 4 or 5 times to practice. Not as much fun as shooting it......
By the way...anybody have an answer to the hang-ups I've been getting? After a couple of clips, I keep getting jammed - bolt half open, a casing half out, and new round stuck at an angle in the barrel....I thought it was the ammo...bought some some jacketed rounds, but still had the same problem. Could it possibly be the magazine? Gun is clean......and shoots like a dream otherwise. Thanks for any insight.........

You sure you're not shooting a Beretta?

Aha...thanks, Airweight.....
In the meantime I stumbled upon some previous threads which dealt with the issue of MK's and ammo. Thanks.....
