we used to lob them .22 rounds out to way past 300 yards at nutrias and gets hits i guess it would be like a grenade launcher but i know if we could kill a 35lbs nutris at 300 yards with a littls old .22 they would be deadly within 100 yards . we never tried a scope at that distsnce though the rouns did seem to be pretty consistant enough to probably set a scope on a calm day but if you had so much as a fly pass by and fart it would blow that light round right off tract. but yes on a calm day you can infact hit target out to 300 yrds and kill them i might try a scope one day to see but thinkin about it now the angle we had to lift the nose of the gun i don't think you can get that much elevation out of a scope.

These target rifles still have a good following in the UK, Last month I picked up an Anschutz Match 64 for just less than $200, which is as much as the sights cost these days (Previous owner had passed on). I didn't need the gun but the price was right. I've also got an Anschutz 1450 and a 1955 BSA Martini.

There's a lot of guys on this forum who will not believe how accurate these rifles can be using iron target sights not Telescopes! I used to be able to turn in quite a few 98/99's with the 1450 but that was a long time ago.

Shooting these things is a great way to prepare yourself for the full bore versions.

Thumbs up

Nowadays, I have the Remington 521T Junior Target rifle on the low side of 'target rifles', The Winchester 75T and Stevens 416 as my mid-level target rifles, and the BSA Mark II Martini is my Top Dog.
All have aperture sights. The Winny and Martini do have scope bases, but I love peep sights! Thay are at least as accurate as light to medium duty scopes up to fifty yards, and even 1 MOA capable at 100 yards on a good day, when the Rimfire Gods are smiling upon me.
All are great fun to shoot! I am NOT competition level, I just appreciate good shootin' irons.....

my son has his 513t that he used in the jr. rifle program at our club. they were raffleing them off and a buddy bought 1 ticket and won it .. i gave him 50 bucks for it ... my son was shooting it at 100 yds and would get a group the size of a quarter .
from the prone and sitting he would get a few 50's with it ... good shooting rifles !!!!

Yeah..., the good 'ol Winchester Model 75. I've attached a couple of pix of my 75 Sporter that shoots as well or better, as any 75 Target that I have ever used. Plus it has the looks to go with it. Love those peeps, even with old eyes! The only other is a Model 52-C Bull barrel that I had with a 8 - 32 Balvar scope (Nice piece of glass!) mounted to it. I made some outragious shots that were so unbelievable I would never even attempt to tell you. The only problem was it weighed something like 15 lbs! I have NEVER shot, seen or heard of a .22 rifle that shot better that that 52, including Feinwurkbeau's (sp?), Anchutz's, Martini's, etc.

As close to Mint condition as you can get with a gun that was made almost 70 years ago! Sorry for the crap pix... it's definitely me and not the gun!

I was in Army Junior ROTC when I was in high school. That was in the early 70s when we wore the khaki service dress uniforms in the fall and spring, and the green Class A uniforms in the winter. We paraded and drilled with fully functional M-14 service rifles, but we shot Remington bolt action .22 rifles in the basement shooting range in our school. We had three retired Army senior NCOs in charge and they taught us standing, kneeling, sitting and prone positions; though I had already learned a lot of that earlier in the Cub Scouts.

Unfortunately, a lot has changed with public schools and young people today. Fortunately though, my son was in a Cub Scout pack that taught good safety and operational use of the .22 rifle. Presently, he is in a Boy Scout troop that does the same. Many of us who are Scout masters are veterans of the armed forces, law enforcement, or both. Finally, we have access to the local Marine bases that provide camping areas and firing ranges. I wish the public schools today were that accommodating.

Standard CCI ammo is about the best before going to Federal Gold Match or Eley. I shot CCI for years, and it took a long time and an Anschutz rifle for me to upgrade to Eley, and then I only did so for matches ($15/50 isn't good for practice ammo when you are shooting 300+ shots per week).

I remember paying $90 for a case of 500 gold federal match 22lr and thought that was steep. They are so expensive i don't have the courage to shoot them just for fun.

My bro in law just graduated from High School this past week, and after seeing some of his classmates... well, I'm not so sure that I'd want to be the firearms instructor! I'd be too afraid two of the kids would get into it and one would be carrying around an extra 1/8 ounce of lead home, or more likely to the hospital. But thats not everyone.

Yeah, the school kids these days are out of touch with reality. When they're not zoned out on PSPs, Wii games, X-boxes, and other electronics, they’re deep into cultish and gang behavior; hardly good candidates for the firing range. Young people who want to shoot these days have to want to seek it out through the Scouts, Venturers, youth clubs, and the very few JROTC units still in the better rounded schools.
