Lets see, I have an AR15, an AK47, and a Mosin M44. Since zombies move really slow, even with iron sights I'm pretty confident I can get headshots at 300 with the AR. (we shoot 300 all the time with irons in the military) I know the Mosin can reach out to 700 easily, but as one of the others posted, I can't find a good scope mount that actually works, so I took it back down to irons too. AK for 200 or less.

Like the OP, my arsenal is missing a good long range rifle. Its my next project as well. I'm thinking 308 bolt action but haven't gotten farther than that at this point.

I'm thinking of "Trading" my Dad one of my 9mm for his .270 w/scope so at least I'd have a chance at head shots farther out....

The strangest thing... you mention 7mm Mauser...

My sister works at a gas store in town and they have some ammo including three boxes of 7mm Mauser!

Several other varieties but no common stuff like 30-06.

one great thing about .30-06...any & every gun store & rural hardware/feed stores carry it & .22lr's. You might not find anything else...but you will find those.

it's also cheaper than most by far.

Zombies move pretty slow but you want head shots. So you want something pretty accurate with "explosive power". I think a .223 loaded with hollow points should do the trick nicely to explode those dead melons out to about 250 yards.

My second choice would be a 308 cal rifle which will give you more range. Your shoulder might get a little sore since they tend to run in herds.

----------------------------------------------------------------------- Can't be a bad store since they carry such as the 7mm mauser . By the way are they cheap? lol. Always looking for more ammo.

I still like my Marlin 336-30/30 with high power scope, along with some other goodies I have.

Hmm If its slow zombies and they are far away I dont see the need to have to waste precious ammo to take it out. Id rather just sneak around it rather than take the shot and draw the attention of a lot more zombies with a loud gunshot.

But... if I do need a long range zombie slayer ill use the 5.56 match precision AR15 Im building.

Ammo commonality with the shorter AR15 Im already most likely going to be carrying as well as parts. Plus im confident with a 5.56 round to the head taking out a rotting zombie.
