John, sorry to hear about Toons.... We lost our Akita back in Sept., and it still sucks.
We are picking up two boxer pups tommorrow, I am sure they will be fun even though they can't replace all the memories we had with the last dog..
It hurts. It hurts REAL bad, especially if you love animals like we do.
Our dog (our son named him Pine Cone) was a Golden Retriever--fun, kind of goofy, but loyal and true. He knew when one of us was feeling bad, and always came to comfort us. Always there to greet us, and was Mom's bodyguard. He was big for a Golden--90 pounds of muscle!
One day, my wife took him for a walk, and he just laid down in the middle of the street. After three vets in the same day, we finally found what was wrong. His body was riddled with multiple tumors; the worst one had grown inside his heart and had actually breached the wall of the heart. The only merciful thing to do was to put him down, and not let him die in a moment of blood and agony.
My son took him in, and was the one who administered the shot through an IV; that was one of the worst days of my life. I still get emotional about our Pine Cone, and so does my wife.
You will never truly get over it, but time heals. I'm sure you will keep your friend close in your heart--I know we do, with ours. God Bless.
My condolences. Never easy to take, been through this a few times myself. Be glad for the joy he brought to you.
About 5 years ago my kids wanted a puppy. I said one day the dog will get old or might get sick and die so before we buy one and get attached to it think about this - are you sure you understand this? They said yes, but I knew they weren't thinking about this - they just wanted to take it home and play with it.
Anyhow 5 years later our Golden Retriever has brought us pure joy as a pet. She's still playful as a puppy, somehow knows when were feeling down, knows her place is to guard the house and just loves to go bird hunting.
Reminds me of a song (by the Pirates of the Mississippi) -
...now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
If I die before I wake, feed Jake
He's been a good dog, my best friend right through it all
If I die before I wake, feed Jake....
John, our pets become members of our family because of the unconditional love they give. It makes their passing a very trying experience and we miss them terribly. I am so sorry for your loss. When you feel that you are ready please come back and visit with your friends here.

So Sorry for your loss. I just read this thread and lots of nice words. Just remember the good times that you gave to each other and know that Toons is in a better place right now with tail waging and waiting for his bud to join in the future.
Best wished through the holidays and Merry Christmas John have a nice toast and a glass of wine in memory of Toons.
WOW, this is the 2nd thread I've had to express my sincere sympathy to and for.
As I said in the other one, they are a member of the family from day one.
I hope in time, that every time you think of Toons it brings a smile to your face; 11yrs is a long time to have a loyal friend and pet. I'm quite sure there are many great memories that will bring about a smile after you've had time to deal with the loss. Again, I am sorry for your loss.
I know it's easy to say remember the good times. Which you will with fondness, and a tear. Been through it too. When my dog Rowdy passed it tore me up as well. But you will eventually be able to remember him with a smile.
My hought are with you Privateer.

Sorry to hear about your loss, my wife and I just lost our cat Shieba last week she would have been 21 in Feb we got her as a 8 week old kitten. Have a very happy holiday season and remember the good times.
Privateer, you have my sincere condolences. They truly do become a member of the family from the moment they've been brought home. I hope as time goes by, the pain lessens and you can remember him and smile...
11yrs. is indeed a very long time.

Privateer - When we take them in, they become a part of who we are. They become family. Good idea to step back and pause for a while, but I do hope than before too long you can make a post and tell us a few stories about Toons. Warm regards,
My loyal friend and great pet of 11 years died today.
He is the one pictured with me here in my avatar. his name was toons and he will be missed dearly.
I'm gonna take a break from here for a few days.
you all have a Merry Christmas and best wishes to you and yours.
privateer So sorry for your loss. My family just went through the same thing as you. We lost Boots 4th of July weekend while camping. Hard thing losing a family member, emotionally tore our family to pieces. Just reading your thread has brought tears to my eyes recalling our beloved friend. We did get a new dog but still have great memories of our missing family member. It will get better and like some others have said he will be waiting for you when it is your turn. Look forwards to seeing you back here in short time. Happy Holidays!!!
