Bury a gun - from Backwoods Home Magazine

Interesting "experiment" from Backwoods Home Magazine.

Bury a gun and ammo for 15 years by Charles Wood Issue #115

He used an oil-based lubricant-type protector instead of cosmoline. Interesting. I guess the extra steps of wrapping in mylar and using silica dessicants (along with wateritight PVC pipe) made a grease like cosmoline unnecessary.

The biggest problem is locating a place to cache the rifle, preferably a privately purchased one that is off the radar. Lots of good, useful information in that article.

As a parenthetic note, if you can't get nitrogen gas to use as a purge, dry ice would also work. it's not as good, but it's inert.

My brother told me about this
paranoid guy who bought a gun
off an individual that he heard
after he bought it was hot. He
ended up burrying it wrapped in
oily rags and in a hard plastic box.
He left it for 8 years. When he dug it up
it was ok.

What a silly thing to do.

Better to invest the time and energy in backing political candidates who won't let our gun rights be further eroded.

With my luck, someone would only find it.

And as I read in another thread, regarding burying your firearm/s. What I read and made a lot of sense was this,

" if it comes to having to bury your firearm/s, isn't then the time to use them to fight for your rights, rather then bury them?

And FWIW, I don't and didn't buy any firearm/s only to bury it/them. I bought it/them to shoot and have fun and if necessary, to defend and protect myself, my family and my property. I'll be dammed if I bury anything.

But it is good to know they'd be fine if I had or decided to for whatever reason...

On another note, it would have been nice if he'd of listed what all this cost him to do, then done a total of what it would cost him to do now. I'm quite sure doing that now, to each rifle some people own, would tend to cost a small fortune. And that would be not including the nitrogen.

Then having the land to bury it is another problem. Then I suppose, if one were to die or end up in a coma or get paralyzed or have some other unforeseen tragic thing happen to them to where they one, couldn't remember or get to where one buried it/them, well, you get my point.

The only thing that'll get buried in my yard is the guy who comes here trying to take them.

The only logical reason to bury a gun imo is if you have 10 or more. You cant shoot them all at the zombies at one time. Better to save some for the cause.

And if you're not home when they come and take them do you have a contingency plan?

If you opt to hide valuables of any kind as a hedge against the unforeseen awful, it would be a good idea to have instructions regarding the location and how you want them distrubuted among your survivors in a safe location, such as a safety deposit box that can be accessed through the reading of your will. There are other ways, of course, but you get the idea.

I presume that all you guys are doing the right and have wills written, right? That's something the wife and I keep mdeaning to get to but it just keeps getting put off. Maybe a resolution this year will do it.
