Cast Vs. Plated bullets

I've been buying cast bullets and getting them for .05 cents each(.38-125gr-fp and 9mm-147gr-fp) For those of you who buy the plated (fmj) bullets. How much do you normally pay per bullet? Include shipping and tax in your estimates. Don't forget to say what caliber and grain your talking about. I would love to start buying the plated ones if they are cost effective. Thanks

In England you'r looking at $20.00/100 for. 303" 125 / 150 / 174 gr FMJ bullet heads.
The weight seems to have very little impact on the price.
.308" are a similar price.

Powder (H4895) is around $48.00/pound

As a comparison - factory loads (Privi Partisan) .303 are around $60.00/100 and 7.62 (military) are around $45.00/100

Is the price you quoted for cast including shipping too? Where are you buying them? That's pretty cheap. I'd like to buy some.

Prices flucturate a bit in the Texas Panhandle

but just to post an old trick I was taught, if you shoot lead bullets put a FMJ at the bottom of the clip or the last cylinder to be fired in a revolver.
Same holds for a rifle.

Supposedly, this is a neat way to get the lead buildup from the riflings.

Note - I was taught this and I cannot verify it but I have used it during my adult life.

I buy them locally at a target range called Target World. That does include tax. The .38's I mentioned above are $27.30 + tax and the 9mm are $23.00 + tax.

Do they ship? Have a website? It's always nice to have another source.

You can also work up a load using COW as a filler in a straight walled case. The cream of wheat will scrub the bore clean.

No they don't ship at all. Their business is the range and they sell firearms, bows, paintball, and reloading supplies.

I have been loading .38 Special and .45ACP in 500 round batches. I buy my bullets from the local Sportsman's Warehouse - no shipping or 'lead surcharge'.

West Coast Bullets .357 Plated Flat Point, 158 grain - $62.00/500
West Coast Bullets .451 Plated Round Nose, 230 grain - $72.00/500

My .308 and .303 (.311 actually) bullets average at $24/100. Depends on who's I buy. I usually use Sierra, Speer or Hornady.

Bullseye powder is $115/8 LBs.
H4895 is $145/8 LBs.

Good post JimKim I was looking at Midway supplies just now and they seemed overpriced in everything, but then again I've been stocked up for some time and haven't really been following the prices. I'm glad I cast and reload now!

I use neither plated or cast for my 9mm, 357 Sig, .40 S&W, 10mm, or .45 ACP. I use Precision Bullets Moly coated. As for instance, I buy 230 grain .45 cal RN molys for 11.1 cents apiece. That includes shipping. The other calibers are cheaper yet.

185 grain .40/10mm 9.5 cents each
125 grain 9mm/357 Sig 6.7 cents each

The moly coating prevents barrel leading, and doesn't cost a whole lot more than hard cast bullets.

Where do you buy those? New to this and I want a database of as many sources as I can get.

There is no wax. The black coating over the bullet IS the lube!

Another reason I like them, they don't gunk up my bullet seating dies with wax.

I have been browsing the Berrys and Precision bullet sites and it looks like a good deal at Berrys on some .38/.357 bullets but I don't see any .45ACP (.451) that I like.

I know it has been asked and answered on here but can I load .452 cast bulets for my .45ACP. I load Hornady HP-XTP's in both guns but just need some inexpensive banging loads to keep proficient as I like to shoot 50 to 100 rounds a week and sometimes more.

Yes, cast bullets are generally made 0.001" larger than jacketed.

Last summer I purchased several boxes of 230 gr. Berry's Preferred pistol bullets for my .45ACP from a local gun store...

...cost with tax was about .09 each, a significantly lower price than buying off Berry's web site.

Berry's Preferred Plated Pistol Bullets (No More Lead Surch

When eBay allowed sellers to offer bullets for sale...

...I purchased several bulk boxes of cast and FMJ bullets, in a variety of calibers and grain weights.

Costs for those bullets was much lower than anything I've found since.

This fall, and earlier when eBay discontinued allowing sellers to offer bullets, I've purchased a few bulk boxes of bullets from these folks...

Hard Cast Lead Bullets - Order

...their prices are quite reasonable, quality is very high and customer service is excellent.
