Just a Note

In conversation, to an old ffriend !!

Just a rememberance really. Many will remember this as well:

Sam- I used to jump cottontails in CA when I was eight ! All I had was a Savage M24 22lr/410 single shot. My brother and Dad had pump savages. I always outshot them 2-1 !! My Father had GREAT wisdom in outfitting us with single-shots early on !! I used to buy 22 shells from a fish bowl next to the cash register at Moores Dept Store. I used to pay for them outta my allowance. My father would not make a special trip for me to buy ammo !!

The proof was seen many decades later, when I took my son and his two friends rabbit huntung on an OK ranch. His buddies had pumps and autos. Something he DEARLY wanted to graduate to. He shot 5 rabbits that day. His friends got skunked !! They also shot a brick of ammo between them. My son shot exactly 10 rds !! To this day, he still has his "Rabbit Medicine". And to this day he remembers my advice...

As I Look back on those days, I pray wholeheartedley, my son remembers them the same !!

I'm sure he will buddy. I remember a cold winter's day with my dad. Amazing Grace by Judy Collins was on the radio as we drove to the Lexington Public Hunting Acreage. We didn't shoot anything, but I will always remember that cold day with my dad as long as I live.

COOL, that's some GOOD memories there! I remember taking 3-5 rounds of .22s with me and my Winchester single shot bolt 67 and coming back with a bunny or two and a couple of rounds for later on. I got my first few boxes at the Western Auto ammo, I would walk in with my 35cents and walk out with a box of RF's at the age of 10. I think making your first shot count had a lot to do with most of my "luck".

These stories bring back a lot of great memories. I agree with the philosophy of starting out with a single shot. It DOES teach making the first shot count. It was so ingrained into my psychie that even when I bought a Remington 1100 I still just single loaded. Shot with the best of them. Hit a few too! HA!

I remember when my dad whupped me and my older brother, for getting in a BB gun fight, with the neighbor kids, right after we got our first and last BB guns. He wrapped them around the nearest tree, and we got nothing for a year or two, for disobeying the cardinal rule. Then, at eleven, and about ninety pounds of sickly kid, he asked me if I thought I could shoot his Ruger .44 mag, without dropping it. I jumped at the chance, and sure enough, it flew out of my hands. He caught it from midair, and told me it was okay, because the gun weighed almost as much as I did! He taught me that if you shoot it, you gotta eat it, and that kept me from turning into a bird assasin, didn't think sparrows would taste too good. He actually taught me to have respect for all life, and not to take it needlessly. What a wise man my Dad was!!!

I remember my Grandpa teaching me how to fish. I was four. He taught me to cast with a Zebco reel. When my son talked about me teaching him to fish...with a Zebco reel, I was really surprised how similar his memory was to mine. It was like he was describing my memory of Grandpa and me. I guess we do transfer our own experiences to our children. I never thought it would be through some sort of reinactment of a memory from long ago. I wonder just how many generations worth of family memories we all carry with us, and don't even know it.

If your son is anything like mine, he will, and so will your greatgrandchildren.

Sounds like my dad. He told us that we shouldn't kill anything unless we were planning on eating it...or it was planning on eating us. Another way he put it was, "there's nothing wrong with enjoying the hunt, but I don't believe in hunting just for the enjoyment."

A new neighbor kid noticed our gun case one day, and commented that we must do a lot of hunting. One of my friends earnestly (if somewhat inaccurately) explained to him, "no, you don't understand. Troy's family doesn't believe in shooting animals. Their guns are for people."

Just think if you didnt have some one to teach you these things........you would just be another anti-gun freak. Without knowledge comes a great down fall.

I thank my Grandfather and my Father everytime I step into the out of doors with a gun or a rod. I thank them for raising me as an outdoorsman, and I thank them for allowing me to raise my children with respect for Nature, and the ability to find beauty in the smallest things laid before me.
