depends on the situation your geting into... in a situation of recon, evade and possible engagement situation, i would use a fabric glove something breathable i carry fingerless bikeing gloves they have a little bit of padding in the palm... if its at the camp doing chores and such a good pair of leather or dearskin gloves keeps the stickers away, ive got a pair of woodland camo gloves w/ non skid palms... it just depends on your use i also carry a leather heavy duty work glove for the unknown, they go into my third line gear...

Several pairs of latex gloves in med kits, winter weight leather gloves for cold weather/general utility use and a pair of thin tight leather gloves (good for dexterity) that work well for shooting and tinkering with small things.

Whenever I go backpacking, camping, etc, I have a pair of the GI gloves with liners I had in the Service, both the lighter black leather and the tan heavy versions.

Best to have gloves for all situations. Never know what won't be available and if you don't have say winter gloves, and get forced to head to colder climate, then you SOL.
So better to have and not need than need and not have...

In a cold&wet situation, avoid cotton like the plague! COTTON KILLS!
I nearly froze my hands once when I forgot that, during a motorcycle ride. Thank Goodness my buddy had an extra pair of Polartek winter gauntlet gloves that were too big for him - I bought them after the ride!
Heavy leather is good for work gloves - elk hide holds up far better than cow hide. Use wool inserts - I wish I still had my Navy work gloves and liners - best work gloves I ever had!
I wear the half-finger gel-palm gloves when I shoot my Colt .45 and Star 9mm Largo autos - they tend to have some 'hammer bite'.
