M-1 blew up

Fired 3 clips of Korean KA-72 headstamped ammo out of my Garand. 1st round of the 3rd clip split my stock wide open. The brass case ruptured all the way to the case head spilling high pressure gas into the receiver. Do yourselves a favor trash any Korean crap you have left. I am.

Sorry to hear you had a problem. I hope you cameout better condition than your rifle?
It is known that there have been problems with both PS and KA headstamped Korean ammo. People use it and dont have any problems others arent so lucky.

I hope you are okay too. That is a sucky way to start off the new year. Are you going to be able to repair it or will you have to part it out now?

It is good that you were not physically injured. Is anything salvageable from this? I hope your gun isn't destroyed.

I would think the action would be fine, requiring just a stock.

Took a little powder fouling in the face. Thank goodness for eye protection. Metal parts seem okay. Ordered a new stock from CMP. There was some discoloration from the hot gas escaping the chamber but the receiver appears undamaged. Boy am I pissed at myself few buying cheap ammo. Learned a serious lesson the hard way. And thanks for caring. It's funny I never thought about my own safety only the gun. haha,,,

At least all you had to replace is the stock. I once had a ricochet come back and kick a bunch of rocks and dirt in my face, I was real glad I had my eyes on then. It's a good safety reminder and a good warning about cheap ammo. Thanks.

Uh-oh, I have some of that stuff! Maybe I should pop 'em out of the clips and put 'em away somewhere for later dismantleing. Crap has corrosive primers anyway, from what I hear.

Do you have any pics of what happened to your stock and how it was damaged? I am new to the Garand world, and was just interested. If the round split so bad and high pressure got in to the receiver, how does the stock split?

I hope everything works out with your gun and you can get things squared asap with the least path of resistance.

Glad your unhurt & sorry to hear about the Garand. FWIW, I've fired 400rds of KA headstamped through mine last year & never had a problem. I've even reloaded them & shot again. I guess, I'm one of the lucky ones.

If the Korean ammo split your stock, what ammo would be better?

The Korean ammo I had sucked. It jam up, and cases would stick in the chamber.

Casing Pics

I threw the stock away in disgust but kept the casing. Here are a couple of pics. The hot gasses act like a knife and look for the least path of resistance. That means the wood breaks first as opposed to the metal. The wood split from the rear of the trigger vertically through the grip and up to the back of the receiver.

Out of the seventy bullets my brother pulled, one had deteriorating powder. For some reason the powder was breaking down. This could cause a slow burn which could cause over pressure. It's an interesting theory.

Been there, done that! But with an m14sa. Luckily just needed a new stock, which was like 20 bucks, new, and much prettier than what was on there. Made the damn thing more accurate actually! Maybe just Gods way of saying "Get a new stock for that!"
Glad you're not injured.

Had the same thing happen to me. Split stock from rear of receiver to butt plate. Rifle all but came out of the stock. Had bought a 20 round box of French manufactured ammo. Gave it back to the store. This may be a reason I took up reloading. Recoil almost knocked me off the shooting bench.
