All greased up

Can some one explain why a new handgun has all that thick gunk inside it? It looks like grease from under my truck.

What brand?

Normally they aren't that greased up, just enough to ensure they won't rust, as the manufacturer has no idea as to how long the firearm could sit in the box or where it might be sitting and they don't want it's new owner to open it and see a rusted gun. So they lubricate them and generally give the ma coating of a rust inhibitor. Which is why you should clean a firearm before first use. Plus it gives you a chance to get familiar with it and inspect it. Besides, just because it's new, doesn't mean something couldn't be wrong???

I got myself a HK USP. A fun piece.
Yeah, GM, you make a great point, they sure don’t want a rusty gun on display. I just didn’t know why the manufacture would put a layer of grease, but now it makes more sense. Also, I did a longer cleaning job then what I am used to doing. Getting that grease off did take some time, but now it’s nice and clean and ready to take to the range.
