Herter's 44 magnum (Any Good?)

A local gun shop has a Herter's 44 Magnum for $294 + tax. I called looking for a Ruger and he didn't have one. I haven't seen it he just told me about it. I never even heard of a Herter's before and would like some feed back. Accurate? Value? Well built? Any info apreciated. Thanks Pontiacdm

When I was young Herter's was a large mail order

firm known for many products but especially for rare woods to use in stocks. It has been out of business for a number of decades. I'm not saying there is anything bad about this gun yet you must realize a gun this old may be broken forever if something goes wrong. I have no idea where you might find replacement or repair parts. If you buy it and later want to sell it you might not find a buyer.

Personally, I would pass on this opportunity.

The Herter's single actions were made by Sauer & Sohn and are quite strong and at least as accurate as a factory Ruger. The .401 PowerMag still has a considerable cult following.

Sauer & Sohn...

Eventually, SIG decided that it would be most cost effective to enter into a business collaboration with the German gunmaker of J.P. Sauer & Sohn. Thus, the SIG SAUER line of handguns was born in the 1970s.

If the gun seemed in good shape, and If the $300 didn't put me in a bind, I'd be really tempted to buy it. But, that's just me.

Looks like a weapon that may have some collector value someday.

The ones I have seen,I would be skeptical. You can buy a decent Ruger for that price.I have little experience with them. They might be the greatest. It's just that personally,I probably would get a used Ruger. sam.

Hawes-Sauer Single-Actions...imported 1973-81.

Hawes Sauer Chief Marshall SA Target Revolver
Hawes Sauer Federal Marshal
Hawes Sauer Montana Marshall
Hawes Sauer Silver City Marshall
Hawes Sauer Texas Mashall
Hawes Sauer Western Marshall...

The really neat thing about those revolvers is that they had Combo Pistols...
.357 & 9mm Para
.45 Colt & .45 Auto
.44 Mag & 44-40

And came standard in .357 mag, .44 Mag, & .45 colt

All the Hawes Deputy versions are .22's or combo .22lr/.22WMR's.

I can find practically no information on Herter's other than it apparently existed.

They were good guns. Basicaly a fugly Single Action revolver made by the SIG people.
But that price is too steep for a gun that can often be found for under $250.
And if something breaks you have to go custom for a spare part, unless parts for an FIE Hombre won't fit it.

But they are accurate, sturdy and reliable guns that just lacked something visually, compared to a Ruger. A friend of mine has one.

I posted this back in January of 2009. I'd say it's long gone by now. If I thought it was still there I would give you his store name and number. That way you could arrange him sending it to your ffl.
