shooting ranges

where do you guys go to shoot?
i used to have access to land i could shoot on, but it got sold.
the only rifle range i know of around here is the williamsburg wildlife club
just outside of williamsburg.
it's a private club, and i can't find a phone # for them.
oh and if you like trap and skeet there's the marais sporting park on the east end of ottawa. no rifle or pistol though.

I don't know where Ottawa is, but Kansas is big and wide open. Can you visit some farmers and landowners nearby? Maybe one has a suitable canyon or gully he'll let you use, if you ask real nice and respect his property (no trash or damage, don't bring idiots with you, etc.).

Might be a little bit of a drive for you, but what about Dragoon Creek?

I grew up in Garnett 25 miles south of Ottawa. They have a range at the north lake. Its a public range, but has some yearly fee, and can only use it when nothing else around the lake is going on. Like a ball game, etc. Good luck

I guess Dragoon is a subsidiary off Pomona. I get to it off Hwy 75 North of Lyndon. There is a ton of public hunting and fishing there and should have plenty of places to shoot.

The north lake range in garnett has went private also . I am an instructer for a state run training class on firearm safety and we use the range but we had to buy in to use it . Once again if you don't have a key your s o l . I have been racking my brain and I just can't think of any public ranges around here. What a shame.

that's no good...one of my friends is a keyholder out at williamsburg, but with the way things have been going lately with our schedules, we can't ever find time to get together.

I'm hoping that they get the range out at hillsdale built.

Hi Ottawa, there is Capital City Gun Club NW of Topeka, but you do have to be a member. On the other hand, the matches are open to the public.

That place is behind High Plains Gun Shop a little ways down the road by I70 and Valencia Road. You also have to be an NRA member and have references from 3 existing members of the club to get in. There is also Kaw Valley Gun Club by the Goodyear Plant in North Topeka. I believe you can pay hourly to use their place, but not sure what rifles they will let you shoot and how far. Capital City you can shoot up to 300 yards there, but have to get permission to do so. I guess there are some non-shooting idiots out there.

Theres tons of WIHA areas listed by the KDWP, but the problem I found is non allow for plinking or shooting tin cans just for fun. It seems were limited to either knowing "someone" or joining the local ranges. I personnaly cannot stand shooting at any range and just pop off a few rounds when Im out scouting the WIHA's just to relieve some stress.
I guess on that note does any one know (or care to share) any better areas that allow for varmint hunting without having livestock or houses 100yds away? Specificially towards the Topeka part of the state?

I'm lucky. My range is my back yard. I can go out to 880 yards there.

Must be nice, I can barely shoot a bb gun at the neighborhood dogs. Has anyone attempted that "pay for use land" listed under the KDWP? If its only a few bucks to shoot on private land thats ok, but if its 100's just to plink its not worth it.
