Surviveing on whats in your pockets

Working for a bush outfit I asked the Pilot one day howcome he doesent pack a personal emergency pack like the others, he replied that useally after a crash sometimes your not able to get your survival pack (company one in tail section) may have only time to get yourself out before ther's a fire or goe's thru the ice or sinks (float plane) float planes useally flip upside down and rest that way for awhile He used a military flyers vest then went to a flyfishing vest and had to survive on whats on your back.
Snowmobilers wear a daypack with what they need incase the snowmobile goes thru a thin river ice (no time to unstrap a bag), summer boaters are useally thrown out or the boat swamps need a wet bag, problem is we usally have such cold water you will die of exposure.
down states one may not have such pressing issues but still raises a good point can you survive on what's on your back & in your pockets?
I wear Carhart Extreme Bib pants=4 pockets, carhart jacket=6 pockets, jeans=4pockets/2 useable
14 pockets that can be used.
What do you carry?

Yes, if you have enough pockets and if you load them judiciously. I have a hunting vest set up that way as part of my bug-out bag.

Experence is important.

Useing the things you learned, funny thing about going to a arctic survival course in Fairbanks a fella picks up a few things, a couple years later used some them ideas and turned them into skills, a co-worker & I spent some time out on the river one spring (march) just camping overnight was quite comfortable drawing off our experences from that course.
It dident take much effort getting a camp fire going and settling in for the night.
Nothing like camping at -09F to learn what works and what doesent and gain practical skills (I take the kids out of town on friday night and pitch a tent and show em basic skills) dressing senseably and showing them proper skills is important I think, cuts down on whineing and prissy behaviour, they will pipe up when somthing is need to be addressed.

If I was A Pilot of a small plane flying through wilderness I would at least keep a small fanny pack to wear in the plane with a 22 revolver, some ammo, knife, compass, map, and flint or waterproof matches inside a zip lock bag in the fanny pack.

And I hate fanny packs.

In the summer I could survive in the Rockies with a fixed blade knife, and really nothing else but my clothes. I know how to make and set snares with cordage from plants, as well as making the cordage, I know how to make a bow-drill fire starter, and I know how to make a shelter, I know where to find safe water and plants to eat, and I am getting better at tracking animals.

In the winter however, that would be challenging. The first challenge is the cold in the Rockies. The second would be finding food, many of the edible plants are dead and no longer edible, much of the water is frozen making acquiring water a real chore. Most of the small game is dormant, rarely coming out of their dens. It would not take long to exhaust the dry dead wood within the area.

Well, Gentlemen...this is where we (females) have the advantage! You see, we carry EVERYTHING in our purse! If it's not in the purse, you ain't gonna need it!

What I carry depends entirely on what I'm doing at the time: Today, at work, all I'm carrying is the clothes on my back, a small set of keys, with a 4gig memory stick attached and a comb in my pocket. Gotta look my best. If I'm going huntin, shootin, fishin, walkin in the wilds, etc. I carry a small survival pack & first-aid pack. On a normal day off, all I carry is my comb, small folding knife, loose change & my wallet with my flexible friends inside.
I've survived this way for over 50 years so I can't be doing much wrong!

With the right attitude, some basic "boyscout skills" and a sturdy pocket-knife; I think most people could get through a lot of bad situations (imo).

I love heavy cargo pants. I have a Nite Ize belt/ pocket pack with Mini Mag, 3" Meyerco serrated folder, a small multi-tool, a magnesium stick, magnifying glass, surgeons mask, and mirror.

On me, whether I'm in the house or not, I carry on me:

Glock 21 .45ACP w/tritium night sights, a 15 round mag and 2 spare mags on my belt.

Spyderco Delica folding knife.

Full size Bic lighter and cigs. (You can roll the cherry off the end of a cigarrette into a tinder bundle to start a fire. It uses less lighter fluid)

Swiss Army knife

Keys on a D-ring with a miniature multitool shaped like a key. (Can't remember what it's called..)

Mini Maglite

Cell phone

Wallet

Depending on where I am, I might also have my pack, which is stocked with all kinds of goodies, as well as a bushman knife and a 6 1/2" barrelled SA .22/.22 Mag convertible revolver and plenty of ammo for small game, etc..

Fire striker w/about 25" of para cord inner line wrapped around its handle on key ring attached to belt loop, Nite Eyez pouch w/Spyderco endura, leatherman kick, cellphone, small first aid collection, workboots w/para cord laces, and usually another knife (depends on my mood which I carry). I am trying to find something that is small and light enough to be used for an emergency shelter (emergency blanket is just too big) and other goodies to add.
