Man arrested outside of airport...

Big scary man arrested with loaded weapons in his truck. Including -- OMG! -- an "assault rifle." An AP wire favorite this morning.

FOXNews.com - Motorist Holding 16 Guns Arrested Outside L.A. Airport - Local News | News Articles | National News | US News

While he obviously made a bad move (which I do not condone) by transporting these in an illegal manner (one loaded for starters), I can't stop thinking, "this could be my uncle." You know? 700 rounds is a good day of shooting.

Anyway. Thought it interesting.

......there was no indication the man was out to do any harm at the airport and was apparently there to pick up someone.

"He just made a very bad decision and should not have been carrying those weapons," Holcomb said.

Ooops.

He only had a loaded Handgun...the rest were all unloaded in the back of his pickup truck in cases...So since when is it against the law to transport firearms ???

California law. I'm doing this from memory but any weapon being transported in the state by a private citizen must be unloaded, LOCKED in a container, or trigger/breach locked and in an inaccessible part of the vehicle. There's always a debate whether a weapon in the bed of a pickup, even a locked toolbox, is properly locked. County population comes into play too for exceptions, and LA county doesn't quite qualify.

Given the debate, I bought a hardshell, lockable tonneau cover for my pickup and a padlockable hardcase for my handguns. When we go to the range the guns are locked in the bed and the hardcase. We carry our ammo in a separate padlockable container, often a thousand rounds.

The article doesn't mention if the cases were locked or the bed accessible, only that they were in a container. The loaded handgun (if he wasn't licensed) and the assault weapon are no-no's in this state.

As I'm writing the information above, a light went off in my head. I just made a phone call to my wife who had an employee that had 16 or 17 guns stolen last month, including his .50 cal. sniper rifle. They were stolen from a storage locker because his wife didn't want them in the house. They were in a safe which the thieves stole with a forklift. All the facilities cameras were disabled prior to the theft. They figure it was an inside job and according to the police the crime was professionally done.

He is a former SEAL and legally owned them all. I don't have his phone number but I found his e-mail in my wife's business file. I sent him the link in an e-mail to call his local police to followup on it. This would be GREAT if they were his even if he didn't get them back for a while.

Here's another article with a little more information. Probably not my wife's employee's stolen collection. Still, this airport guy's "ooops" may end up with a felony conviction.

A couple of years ago a member of G&G by the handle of "Ash" was driving in Maryland??? and got caught up in a very similar situation as the current one in Cali.

Subsequently, he didn't have the bail money required for the $50,000 bond and spent several months in jail before his court case came up. He and his shooting buddy were also on their way to a shootilng range with unloaded guns in the back of his van.

Last I heard all his guns were confisticated...and never returned. I'd be very interested in how Ash's case came out if any here has heard.

My wife and I carry conceal carry permits when we transport arms/ammo on a shooting day...

...and on any other day for that matter.

All this anti-gun crap...

...is a load of crap.

Cool

Please note that it was the Airport Police and "NOT" TSA that was involved! I only mention this this because of all the crap I get for being TSA. For information on what the DHS/TSA allow as far as firearms go, go to TSA.gov and look for approved/prohibited items or search firearms! The TSA restrictions are reasonable, and why would you "NOT" lock up your weapon?
