California law. I'm doing this from memory but any weapon being transported in the state by a private citizen must be unloaded, LOCKED in a container, or trigger/breach locked and in an inaccessible part of the vehicle. There's always a debate whether a weapon in the bed of a pickup, even a locked toolbox, is properly locked. County population comes into play too for exceptions, and LA county doesn't quite qualify.
Given the debate, I bought a hardshell, lockable tonneau cover for my pickup and a padlockable hardcase for my handguns. When we go to the range the guns are locked in the bed and the hardcase. We carry our ammo in a separate padlockable container, often a thousand rounds.
The article doesn't mention if the cases were locked or the bed accessible, only that they were in a container. The loaded handgun (if he wasn't licensed) and the assault weapon are no-no's in this state.
As I'm writing the information above, a light went off in my head. I just made a phone call to my wife who had an employee that had 16 or 17 guns stolen last month, including his .50 cal. sniper rifle. They were stolen from a storage locker because his wife didn't want them in the house. They were in a safe which the thieves stole with a forklift. All the facilities cameras were disabled prior to the theft. They figure it was an inside job and according to the police the crime was professionally done.
He is a former SEAL and legally owned them all. I don't have his phone number but I found his e-mail in my wife's business file. I sent him the link in an e-mail to call his local police to followup on it. This would be GREAT if they were his even if he didn't get them back for a while.
