Snakes

I have a strange question for you guys? I have attended many survival training adventures in the military from all over the US to JOTC in Panama. I have eaten just about anything that moves and all that training has saved my life many time all over the world. When hunting snakes to eat here in the US we always eat Rattlesnake and even to this day still really enjoy it. But when it came to eating snake it was always Rattlesnake. My question and it has never arised asked by my son is can you eat other kinds of snakes, copperheads, garden snakes, black snakes and so on. Honestly I told him I didn't know. In a situation anything can be eaten to survive. So what does everybody think, can you without any health problems such as sickness or whatever?

With surviving in mind, you just want food. Either youll die of starvation or eating something that wasnt edible. At least eating something gives you more time.

Its up to you, really.

All snakes are edible; even the poisonous ones (the venom sacs are located directly behind the head, removing the head removes the venom sacs)

Like any food you want to properly cook it.

Just make certain you get to or past 160 degrees for safety.

+1 on that, as are all bird eggs and fresh water fish. I know most probably know that already but thought I would reiterate it as this is a kind of what is edible question.

Snake Steak

Snakes are very tasty, especially snake soup I have partaken of in China. Walking down the street in Guangzou(Canton) is like a visit to the Zoo: Snakes,Turtles,Birds, many Fish, all live and healthy, along with little kitties and doggies. All fresh, and destined for the dinner table. Be sure to fry the Scorpions though. Yum!

The reason rattlesnakes are eaten more commonly is they are larger than many North American snakes and are easier to find because they don't hide when confronted, but instead make a nice noise to follow.

Sure. Lionfish strike me as particularly inedible. Puffer fish is generally toxic, although there is a way to prepare it so it is edible. This is the Japanese Fugu fish. There's a lot of tropical fish I wouldn't eat.

I have been in those markets in the world where they sell puppies for dinner. Most won't eat them, but actually they are quite tasty. Monkey ain't a bad dish either.

If it's made of meat, I'll eat it! Except for scavenger type animals if I get a choice. Those taste like crap.

When I was a kid, many decades ago, I was taught by some trappers that any bird that had a gizzard was edible. The rest tasted pretty bad. Also the roots of the cattail are a pretty good substitute for potatoes. The dandeloin makes an excellent salad and wine if you know how to do it. I wonder if my kids know all this.

Yeah, and how many could clean a bird and recognize a gizzard if it had one?

Depends on the size of the snake, I have never ran accross one that survives a blast of Win XX #000 HaHa, also will take care of the two legged snakes. Not much left too clean up either kinda turns them into a vapor cloud.
