buckingham army air field

down here in buckingham we have the old airfield its not so much what im wondering about its the bunkers scattered randomly around since this is the florida forum does anyone have any info

I see this is an old thread but hopefully it's still OK to reply.

I worked for United Telephone co, later Sprint in Fort Myers.

One of my coworkers was a native from that area and he told me that the army airfield near Lehigh Acres had giant holes dug in the ground after WWII and they filled the holes with Jeeps, typewriters and anything else they could find.

We used to shoot our .22 Rugers out in Lehigh Acres but you had to be on the lookout for huge Florida Diamonbacks.

I bought a Sheltie pup from a breeder in Lehigh Acres and the guy had a picture on his wall of him holding two diamondbacks, one in each hand.

He was well over 6' tall and had his hands raised up high and the snakes were dragging on the ground. He said they were live when the picture was taken.

that would explane the giant dirt mounds with no ditches or anything
