Hunting Sidearm

What do you carry for a sidearm in the woods? I have a Ruger SP101 .357 with 2-1/4 barrel or a Ruger P89 9mm. I perfer the .357 but would like to be able to reach out and hit a target farther out than what the 2-1/4 barrel allows me. Do I need to go to a GP100 with a 4" barrel or find something with a 6" barrel. Help needed.
Thanks

I have a security six in357 with a 4in barrel ..........it was pretty cheap and looks to be built like a workhorse! For FLA I would say357 is sufficient, if I were in the rockies or outwest would desire 44mag ATLEAST!.........here in Ohio 357 is fine

Two factors enter into your decision

First, you will get a bit of a boost with a six inch barrel as opposed to a four inch barrel. Although I do not recommend it, one of my favorite uncles (now deceased) hunted deer successfully with his six inch Colt Python.

Second, it becomes a matter of which gun you fire most accurately. A four inch barrel may balance better in your hand and present a better sight picture. So, accuracy may be better with a four inch barrel. Personally, a four inch barrel works best for me.

So, I suggest you take time to fire a six inch and a four inch in the gun you like the best. It really comes down to what works best for you.

It is a secondary firearm for woods emergency, not for hunting.

Kentston, since there are things in Florida that can eat or kill you, I would go with the 6" bbl. in either .357 or .44 Mag.

I use a 4 inch 44 magnum Taurus Tracker. 44 mag power in a 38 spec sized gun.
