In terms of game, what is the most calorie-rich part of the U.S.. In other words, what part of the country is the most game rich and what are the richest forms of game? I hear Lewis and Clark had a hard time in the Pacific Northwest; hard to get elk, parasites in the salmon, tubers gave stomach problems, etc.
As you mentioned salmon I feel o.k. about including fish in my reply. The South has deer, feral hog, a variety of game birds, plus (and this is a big plus) a wide variety of fish including those wonderful catfish. Also, the South has a longer warm season and a shorter winter wherein obtaining game food might be more difficult.
However, this is just an opinion so I am sure you will get other well informed opinions.

I see what you mean about fish not being game ... my bad.

I wouldn't count on the conditions being the same today as when L&C were around.
I don't know but it seems like you could look into the game limits and seasons for various animals in different parts of different states. In GA you can take 10 whitetail deer per year. I've heard that in at least some parts of FL you can take a deer a day for the whole season, but I don't know how long that is. In TX rabbits are not a game animal and you can take as many as you want any time you want day or night. Squirrels are also no limit and open season in some parts of TX. Who has more game? That's a hard question to answer.
Of course the real problem is that the conditions now will not hold forever. If food prices go way up there will be more and more people chasing after the game. I suspect that poaching would increase greatly in most areas. If more people lose their jobs then there will be more people with time to go hunting, so again more people after the animals. Disease can reduce the game population. Remember the chronic wasting disease in CO?
I don't know if AK is really the place with the most game per area. AK has a low population but the percentage of people that hunt is probably higher than many other states so that figure might be a little deceiving. OTOH the population density is low, so maybe that evens out. What do you do about scurvy in AK?
Alaska Moose and Caribou meat contains vitamin C in sufficient quantity to combat Scurvy...No other meat anywhere has been found like ours...we also have rose hips from all the wild roses everywhere that are loaded with Vitamin C..

What about Moose in the Rockies, they would have Vitamin C as well I assume. Rose hips are also very easy to find here, and make a great tea with some pine needles.

There were a hell of alot more deer in L&C's day than there is now, and I wouldent have any problems surviving on my own in the Northwest. Theres plenty of game, wild berries and plants to eat.
Hunting and Gathering only got us so far.. Agriculture and ranching (the old way) is your best bet... Good luck keeping the thieves away in TEOTWAWKI scenario though! lol

Don't forget raccoon and beaver. 2 pounds of roasted coon meat holds about 2600 calories, if I remember right. That's a nice bit of energy from one trap or one shot, you know...
