I can lift a 200lb person without a problem. When this deer was field dressed, I had to lift the head above the tailgate with every muscle in my body maxed out. I was leaning back at a 45 degree angle tugging and working the deer up into the bed almost slipping even with my Rhino Lining. After his shoulders were at tailgate level, I used his front body mass to flip the rear and inch it up bit by bit. Conservative weight estimate was originally 250lbs+. But after the taxidermist did some measurements, I am beginning to re-evaluate my previous estimate. The average distance from the tip of the nose to the center of the eye on a mature Blacktail buck is 6-7". This buck measured a jawdropping 8.75"! A large trophy-sized mule deer cast will have to be used for the mount, which has led me to believe this animal could have pushed 300lbs. You be the judge, look at the pictures.
This Blacktail Deer was taken in the Rainforest on Washington's Olympic Peninsula late last year on one of the last days of November. It was in full rut, and was called in with a rattle-bag and grunt call. While scouting for Elk a day before late Deer/Elk season opened, I happened to come across the hottest spots for Boone & Crockett class Blacktail I have ever seen. Driving down from 3,000' elevation just before dark, and well into dark, I ended up seeing over a dozen bucks this size and bigger running down the mountain and across the old unmaintained road I was on. Some of them were sporting racks so large, I almost ended up veering off the road down a cliff because of the shock.
This is the buck I ended up arrowing, and was the first one I spotted during daylight. Got a perfect shot with a full pass through, leaving the arrow stuck in a tree. The rack will probably make Pope & Young's 90" Blacktail minimum score being 19" wide and 17" tall. Three main points, one scorable eyeguard, one broken off eyeguard, and two unscorable little kickers on the back of the left antler, right above the burr.
It ain't no record by any means, and I've taken much bigger-racked Blacktails in the past. But it's a beautiful trophy to me, with his double throat patch, well defined jet-black forehead, and dark mahogany-colored rack. I'm happy with it.
Look at the body on this thing. I still can't believe how tall this Deer was. It's rack was well above my head height at 5'10". My friend saw the picture and said it looks like a freakin' Elk. lol
And the best part is, my son was right there by my side throughout the hunt, and was able to experience it firsthand.
This picture shows how massive the head was, but still doesn't do it justice.
Here's some different views of the rack
Even though the head is in a bag, you can still see where the tip of the nose, and the back of the head are. Milk Jug and 2-liter bottle are a good size reference.
