C&R pistol purchase in Michigan

I've purchased many modern handguns. I've used my C&R to buy 100 or more long guns, but never a handgun.

Can someone tell me how purchasing a C&R pistol works here? Specifically with regard to mail order (Classic, J&G, AIM, etc)

Since they are out of state, I assume there is no need for the (stupid) purchase permit.

Since we no longer have a "safety inspection" here, do I need to do anything??

Sean, I'd start by looking in your copy of State Laws & Published Ordinances - Firearms that the BATFE sent you when you got your C&R to find out what the Michigan rules are. My edition is dated 2006. The laws may have changed since then, but that will give you a starting point. If I'm reading it correctly, as of 2006 Michigan doesn't care if the pistol is purchased out of state; they still want a safety inspection. Section 28.429 of the Michigan Police Code regarding firearms begins, "A person within the state who owns or comes into possession of a pistol shall, if he or she resides in a city, township or village..." (Italics mine.) C&R license or not, it looks to me as if that safety inspection rule still applies.

Call the state office of the BATFE, explain what you want to do and ask them what the Michigan rules are at the moment. They will tell you if you need that safety inspection or not. You may or may not be able to have a C&R eligible pistol shipped to your home; I can't find anything in the Code on that, but BATFE will know. Once you get through to a human being, they can be very helpful.

I'm sure glad to hear they did away with the stupid safety inspection. It cost me another 100 mile trip back and forth to St. Ignace every time I bought a hand gun.

Michigan did do away with the "safety inspection" part, but pistols still have to be registered.
