A guy I work with inherited a Ruger Mark II or Mark III a while back--he doesn't know which 'cause it's pretty beat up, he said. I myself don't know jack about these pistols, haven't even ever seen one except in pics. His problem is the thing didn't have a clip in it and nobody knows where it went. From the small amount of research I did I learned that the magazine release for these two models is located in a different place, which I would assume means the magazines aren't interchangeable. Is this right, and if so, how does one tell the two models apart. Is there some glaring difference that will make it obvious for him to order the right magazines?
Well if it is old and beat up, it's probably not a Mark III I would think. Someone more knowledgeable might know the exact info. But I would go to the Ruger site, look up the serial number, and then you'll know if it is a Ruger MK I or MK II.

The Mk I and II have the magazine release at the bottom of the grip behind the magazine well. The Mk III has a 1911 style release on the left side of the grip behind the trigger. I don't have a Mk III so can't describe the difference in the magazines.

Huh Huh Swede, I've got a Mark I and a Mark II they each have the magazine catch under the grip. The major Difference on these two is the bolt hold open device incorporated into the Mark II. The Mark III they changed the Magazine catch and included a loaded round indicator. I had thought of getting a III because the magazine release is so much more convenient and user friendly.

Steve, I believe your correct on the I and II magazines not being interchangeable. I haven't taken the time to try it with my guns though. It probably has to do with the bolt lock. I assume you were referring to me, Rgr is meant stand for Ruger. I don't want to be accused of shooting Rangers!

Roger, Ruger (LOL). The Ruger MK I and the MK II have the followers backwards from each other. All you have to do is to disassemble the magazine and turn them around !!

Unless your Mk II is a .22/45. Then there's another part on the base to make it work with the 1911 grip angle. It seems kind of odd inserting the magazine not parallel to the front and back of the grip.

I had 2 mags given to me by a fellow in Wisconsin,his son had killed himself with a Ruger and just gave them to me.First thing I noticed was the button on the side was oposite of mine and the slot was only on one side,had a machinist friend mill out the other side,anyway to make it short it never worked in my gun. (www.cdnnsports.com) has factory mags just got their catalog for the Mk.1,2,and 3 for $18.99,these are factory Mags.
