To a real Alaskan with his last few dollars, buying toilet paper isn't even an option should a pound of R-22 go on sale.

Had some sheefish keeping in the snow bank out in front the house, had some last night, used the bow saw and hacked off some 2" cross sections, poped the frozzen guts out and peeled the skin off easy, marinaded thumb sized chunks in italian salaid dressing and some soy sauce, pan fried with a spot of extra vergin olive oil and yella onion served up with some steamed rice on the side, kids cleand it all even licked the plates off.

Living in Alaska and my preconcieved ideas.

I hired on back in 89 to wrench for an outfit in Barrow Ak, I was told by another aircraft mechanic that he was dissapointed by moving to Alaska he brought all his camping gear and hunting/fishing gear and all he did was work never any time off, he said the place was rundown and the folk rude, well I came to Alaska expecting to work, not play, boy was I in for a surprise, your preconceived notions will alway's be blown outta the water so its best to come here with no expectations at all and you'll do alright.
My first day there the guy's asked if I wanted a burger and coke (from Arctic Pizza)well that was over $12 for some mongo giant burger sandwiched between a couple paper plates and a can of coke where I came from you could 2 people eat out comfortably on that! I thought well this is Alaska thats normal, a short while later walking home after work spotted
a drunk fella (race not specified to protect the the others) pissing, pants down round his boots and yelling as loud as he could "Let Me In you Ass Hol#'s " to the front door security cammera of the Barrow PSO office! I thought well thats normal after all this is Alaska!
Head a radio announcement Polar Bear warning in Browerville, I thought well thats Alaska! seems there were so many things that now stand out as uniquely "Only in Alaska!".
My favorite is the list of names announced on the public radio all please come by the Public Health Clinic as soon as you can! from the public health aid disease disease prevention office (they arnt so blunt as they used to be, now its not PC to do that)
Only in Alaska can you have your name read on the public radio to get your V.D. shot.

Sleds run on gasoline aka juce.

A Alaskan sled has grip heat, thumb throttle, useally in excess of 500cc and is capable of water skipping short distances, most off the road system wear long tracks.

A sledge is useally hafted in Hickory or Fiberglass and not near as fun to operate as a sled.

In Alaskan Bush speak a Cessna 207/207A are referrd to as Sleds as hey You a sled driver? means your asking if one's pilot of a 207/207A commercialy moving freight/bypass mail and maybe a passenger or two.

Basket sleds are outdated crumbling wooden shit, "Siggies Are the Shit"(Alaska Sled Works) the old name was Sigland Sled Works are currently the last word in trail stock for carting your gear in the boonies.

Alaskans sleep through earthquakes, and only know they happened because the clock is on the floor.

You didn't learn about counties, and you thought 907 was the only area code.
