Played hooky from work today after working 6 days a week, 12-15 hours a day since returning from the Christmas break on January 5th. What did I do? I headed to the range!

After watching the videos I mentioned in my last post and doing quite a bit of dry fire practice, I improved significantly in this little one-man competition (come on guys and gals). I was holding the gun too far below the backstrap. Once I held the weapon correctly, I was amazed at how much recoil rise it took out of the shot. The first time I shot this competition I felt like the gun was going to fly out of my hand when shot single handed. Not this time. Rock solid.

Combine that grip lesson with the recommendation he gave in one of the videos to use enough trigger finger that you reach the frame before the gun fires so you can stage your shot. Once you have the position of your finger right, it is basically like firing single action. You pull until your finger hits the frame, stop, and slowly squeeze from there. My scores improved dramatically.

The last time I tried this I shot a 76 on my first target and a 91 on my second (it was actually a 95 when I re-added, but I said a 91 above so I'll stick with that).

First target I shot today was a 139 with only one shot off target. With my strong hand, single hand, I put three shots through basically the same hole. High target of 44 (strong-single handed), low target 29 (weak-double handed), average 34.75.

Second target was a tad better at 146. I didn't have as high or as low a single target, but no off targets. High target of 40 (strong-double handed), low target 33 (weak-single handed), average of 36.5.

Man, I'm learning all kinds of things about my strong and weak side I didn't know. I'm still doing something wrong with my weak hand because I have a blister on my trigger finger. Plus I've always demonstrated a bit of ambidexterity, but this shooting is confirming it more than I ever suspected. I need bifocals that I can wear at the range so I can use both eyes. Jtuck, if nothing else, thanks for what I've learned from this little competition. It has been an eye-opener (pun intended).

February 28th deadline's approaching. Just a bump for a reminder. Still plenty of time to punch holes in targets.

Is it a black only front sight? If so, my wife's GP100 had the same problem. Here's what I did.

Go to the discount drug store and buy the cheapest long-wearing fingernail polish you can find in the color you want for the sight (white, orange, red, whatever). Also buy a clear fingernail polish and a remover (in case you want to change colors later). We found some stuff for a $1 a bottle.

Sparingly paint the sight face with 3 or 4 coats, letting it dry for 15 minutes or so between coats, making sure you don't get any on the sides of the sight. Then coat with the clear to seal it. BINGO! Visible sight.

Here's a picture of my wife's GP100. I also added long-lasting glow in the dark paint to hers before I sealed it and when charged for 20 minutes or so is easily seen at night, all night.

If you click on the picture below, it will open another screen. Click on the picture again and it opens another session. Click on the picture again and you get it full size.

$3 and I have enough fingernail polish to do hundreds of sights. Or you can pay $16 for a replacement sight plus shipping. I'm cheap when it comes to stuff like this.

Wont be able to shoot as I have to work and next weekend will have our daughter here from school and also have to work so will still miss the shoot.I have been trying the stuff you posted before and seems to help greatly.

Nice job! Ya gotta admit is sure helps. I used the same color as you on my Ruger Mk 1. DEFINITELY made a big difference. I've shot several hundred rounds through the Mk 1 and the sight looks like the day I painted it. My wife has only shot about 100-150 rounds through the GP but the polish is holding fine. I use a spray solvent when I clean our guns and I'm not the least bit careful about avoiding the front sight. No problem. Heck, if it flakes, use a little remover and repaint.

Jtuck, you and your little contest have turned me into a DA only shooter once I've learned to stage the trigger with my finger hitting the frame on the pull. I went to the range today, but there was a 1-2 hour wait to get a lane. Screw that, I went to an outdoor range with fixed 15 yard targets so I couldn't do the contest.

I only shot double action and found that I was getting 1-2 inch groupings consistently with factory Blazer aluminum loads on my 4" .357 Taurus Tracker. I was shooting no longer than 2 second intervals. Completely shot the center ring out of two 6" Shoot-N-C targets over the course of only 100 rounds.

I tried some weak hand stuff, both one and two hands, but my head wasn't in it. Went back to strong 2 hand DA and loved the results. I obviously grip the gun differently with DA. Definitely holding it firmer.

Thanks again. All this has made me a more accurate shooter.

I think we'll just leave this category open for a while, and let people post their results. I hate to admit it, but I haven't had a chance to do any shooting since I posted this contest. Thanks Noboundaries for keeping us motivated. I guess you're the undisputed winner since no one else has a target posted (including the originator of the contest). I've got 2,000 bullets coming from MBC this week so I can't use that as an excuse any more.
