I'd recommend a Dunham's, Big5 or some other sporting goods store that would have them on sale. It seems like when you order online, you can't really see what you're getting, so you have to pay extra for the hand picked option, and you get blasted in the a$$ with shipping.

Yea +1 Steve. There is Classic Arms they are in TN. But I don't think they'd let you come in and pick one out. They are selling their Mosins for $100. But Chris also suggested good places. I don't think you'd have any Big 5 stores out your way.

I don't remember where you said you were at, but if you are ever around Yelm, there is a gun shop I think its called the County Line its right in McKenna in an old church building. Not far off from Stewart's Meats either. They do good work there. The guy in the gun shop wants to outfit his shop with reloading stuff, and eventually get more into the surplus firearms field, which will include more Mosins. He had 2 I think on the wall when I was in there on Monday.

If you are willing to pay the transfer fees to a gun store since you can't get a C&R license (why not? age issue?), I'd suggest Classic Arms in North Carolina (they are near Charlotte), I.O., Inc. (ditto), and Southern Ohio Gun Distributors as the closest mail order operations to you. But you might try calling around the gun shops within a reasonable driving distance (say, 30 minutes) and asking if they have any in the racks, and going to take a look at them. They often show up at gun shows, too.
Duhnam's, Big5, gun shows, even Gander Mountain have rifles for around 100 bucks or less. Also, keep checking your independent gun shops that carry a lot of used guns. I have found quite a few deals sitting on gun shop racks. Check your news papers as well. Half the fun in collecting to me is in the search.

I agree about the searching part. About 4 years back after my dad passed away, we sold away half of his guns, mostly the newer semi autos and handguns to help pay for his funeral and I kept the ones I thought would be harder to come by when I got older like the M1 Carbine and Kar 98k and the ones he had gotten me.
The Christmas after, I went in to a gun shop a little ways away from me looking for a decent MilSurp rifle for a Christmas gift for me my mother said I could get...and being the ever curious gun enthuiast my dad made me, I perused the handgun section and I could not believe my eyes. There was a two-tone OD Green&Matte Black SiG P229 and I knew it looked familiar. So I asked the owner who happened to be working there if he could tell me the serial number on it, he was willing to do so and when he did, sure as **** it rang a bell and I knew it was my dads handgun. He told me that someone had bought it, but didn't care too much for the smaller SiG, so the guy sold it back to the gunshop. The shop wanted $250 for it and they wouldn't budge too much on the price, so I asked my mom if she could buy it instead of a rifle since the handgun meant alot to me since it was the first one I had ever fired. To be honest, I've had it since December 2005 and never fired it once, I have plenty of 9mm ammo for it, but whenever I hold the handgun it brings back all these memories of him and I just dont feel like shooting it. But I will when the time is right.

Very cool, you were meant to have that gun. Keep it forever, remember your Dad and pass it on to your child.
