Senate Flight Record

This was in today's Wall Street Journal, it's about untimely deaths
in the Senate. Beisdes the number of untimely Republican deaths, look at the number of plane crash victims from this short list, Start by including Wellstone.

Paul Wellstone’s death last week could change the tenor of the Senate, which Democrats now control by a 50-49 margin. A look at how similar untimely deaths have affected national politics.

June 29, 1986: Sen. John East (R., N.C.) commits suicide.
Democrats win the seat that year, helping the party take control of the Senate.

April 1, 1991: Sen. John Heinz (R., Pa.) dies in plane crash.
Democrat Harris Wofford wins special election, propelling career of strategist James Carville and signaling President George H.W. Bush’s 1992 vulnerability.

July 18, 2000: Sen. Paul Coverdell (R., Ga.) dies of a stroke.
Georgia’s Democratic governor appoints his gubernatorial predecessor Zell Miller, now a leading Democrat who backed President Bush’s tax cut.

Oct. 16, 2000: Gov. Mel Carnahan (D., Mo) dies in plane crash.
Widow Jean Carnahan takes office after her husband posthumously defeats Republican incumbent John Ashcroft. Mr. Ashcroft becomes President Bush’s attorney general; Ms. Carnahan now most endangered Democratic incumbent in 2002 election.

If I'm reading folks right here in MO, Carnahan (Dem) is likely to lose her senate seat to Talent (Rep) who is in favor of the right to carry.
