You guys have a preference? All my rifles are cock on open, so there is that slight resistance when lifting the bolt, and absolutely nothing on closing. I had never encountered a cock on close rifle untill the other day when my buddy was showing me his new rifle. I had the hardest time getting the bolt closed because i wasn't used to that resistance. i'm sure over time using a rifle like that i'd get used to it but it would take time, and i still prefer the cock on opening.
i love my lee enfield no 1 mk 3 its real fast and smooth the resistance when closing is quite easy to get used to i prefer it over cock on opening but theres nothing wrong with the other is there any other bolt action that is cock on closing other than the lee enfield series of rifles ?
my traditions inline muzzle loader is a cock on close but i dont think that really counts. as far as i know the enfield is the only cock on close centerfire. nick look up the Mad Minute videos on youtube.

Small ring Mausers for the most part are cock on closing.
His is a Springfield M1917 30-06 (ok not a new rifle, but new to him ha) and it cocks on close.
And the reason it makes a difference to me is because with all my rifles, there is no resistance when closing, so i'm used to doing it that way. The cock on close the resistance was quite unexpected so it caused me to get hung up on it.
have never shot a cock on close rifle..but, just thinking about it seems like it'd be a good idea..seems that you'd notice the resistance less when "pushing" the bolt than when "pulling" the bolt..seems like it'd be a smoother and possibly faster action..this is all coming from no experience at all..just from what is seeming logical in my head..

The cock on open actions don't cock when "pulling" they cock by a caming action when the bolt handle is lifted.
yeah thats exactly what i was about to add. beat me to it Purdy ha.
And yeah i guess if you expected that cock on close bolt then it wouldn't be a problem. but when ya lift the bolt then cycle it and hit that resistance its kinda like what the heck.............
when you all say the small ring mauser is a cock-on-close, does it cock when pushing the bolt forward or when turning the bolt handle down? just curious. and know why the difference in the small ring and large ring mausers?
I've never shot a cock on close but even just working the action feels weird when your're not use to it. I guess that its kind of like driving on the wrong side of the road, if you're not from England it just feels weird!!!
