Hi all,
I am also new to loading and I have loaded some .308 Hor fmj/bt on top of 46.5 Varget. I set the COL at 2.810 but was a pain with the .308 and a classic Lee. I did pick up some Hor 174gr in 303 cal (.3105) but have not found any comperable loading data with Varget.
Second question, I have seen some reduced loads here and there with Unique. What are some of your favorite reduced loads?

Reduced loads in a MOSIN?
Mosin is for shooting with big bang and muzzle flash! Recoil is required to be stiff! Reduced loads are for panty waists who shoot plastic guns!
I suppose next you will ask for a shorter bayonet!
I personally have not done any reduced loads for my Mosins yet.
Yeah I know, a real man will low crawl from his truck, in the gravel with their Mosin Nagant in a drag bag, and approach the line in a true military manner.. I am just looking to try various loads for 50Y, or something for smaller game or whatnot. Heck the surplus ammo can be had for about 18 cents a round, so the loading is just something to do between range trips.

Probably a much better place to ask this question is the Handloading forum here.
Curiously enough I have some of those as well (174gr. .3105 Hornady fmjbt). I used the same moderate loads as for the 174gr. Sierra Match hpbt (42gr. Varget or 43gr. IMR/H 4895). Even though the Hornady bullets have a canalure I do not crimp as I do on the shorter 147gr. military surplus pulls, as the bullet seats deeper and tighter in the case neck.
I find that for most decent MN bores (measure the land not the groove) .308 bullets work well also. I've had very good results with Speer, 180gr. Spitzer .308 (same loads as 174gr.).
Incidentally I find that a common error is that when people slug the bore they measure the groove, not the land. If the bore (land) were .312 then it would be considered shot-out. A new bore (land) should be around .300". Hence the original specification of "3-line bore" or 7.62mm/25.4mm=.300" (25.4mm=1").
Hope that helps.

Unique is fine for pipsqueak loads. I have used it with 100 gr. 32/20 bullets.
Since I have a lot of IMR4227, I found that about 31 grains with a 100 grain Hornady XTP .312" pistol bullet is quite fun. I try to elevate the muzzle to keep the powder over the flash hole.
Both of these targets were shot at 50 yards with an M44 and a Russian M91 respectively.

ok, here's something i've always wondered about.
the loads on hodgden's pages are for .308 bullets in a .308 barrel.
wouldn't this be the same as shooting a .311 bullet out of a .311 barrel assuming the same bullet weight?
I've got some reloads to try but haven't had the chance yet.
they are 150gr.308 Nosler BTs, and the bore on my M-44 slugs out at .311.
i guess i got lucky and got a more or less unissued m-44

the best hot and fast load I have is a 110gr Sierra Varminter bullet with 51 grains of Varget rifle powder. absolutely zings downrange.
