SHTF ammo

Well Ive been slowly collecting a predesignated amount of quality SHTF ammo for my general long term stores.

Im lacking in handgun ammo and and Im 50% full of my target marks for rifle/carbine ammo.

Couple questions.

Federal Lake City XM193 5.56x45 ammo is next to impossible to find these days or if you do find it its really, really expensive.

Can anyone else recommend other higher quality ammo brands that I might want to look into for bulk purchases, 500-1,000 round purchases at a time?
Preferably 5.56mm in 55-75 grain size? That way a I have a few more options open to me.
.223 works too I guess.

Also besides the cheap dirty, practice ammo, whats a good quality brand for 230grain .45ACP BALL ammo?

Thanks

Thumbs up

Locally, components are easier to find than bulk ammo - I've been loading my own.

I heard from a GOOD source that all you need for any SHTF situation is a few thousand rounds of 22 bulk ammo and a 10/22.

I'm sorry I said that.

Wolf ammo tins used to be a great deal for .45 ACP, but I've not been able to locate these at all. Everyone's backordered or out of Wolf (which for me is cleaner burning and cheaper than Magtech). Saw a few deals on Finocchi (sp) and occasionally get an OK deal on Blazer, but the .45's here and from my usual sources are slim pickens for anything but very high end defensive stuff.

If you can find it, for other than TP rounds, S&B, Finocchi, and UMC/WWB are some of the better mid-grade 230 gr ball brands. Occasionally you can find some Blazer Brass as well.

I don't see the fuss over a .22 for survival. It's your best bet actually. But I'd also want a heavier gun.

If you are stockpiling 22 ammo ,take it out and shoot some before you invest in alot. I bought several bulk packs of Remington at walmart over a period of time and when I shot some had 1 in 10 fail to fire, that was the average for several hundred rounds in several different guns. I have some federal but havent shot it yet to see if its any better. It might be a good idea to shoot 10% of every caliber youre stockpiling to see if you have any issues. Never had any problems with any other Remington ammo.

SHTF ammo is any ammo you have on hand, buy often. Good luck looking for 223 or 45 ammo,

I don't usually get more than about 1 or 2 REAL cartridges that won't fire to a box of remington.

There are prolly 8 misfires to a 550 box but if you rotate the rim they usually work fine.

I"ve opened up a case that WOULD NOT fire and had been hit 5 or 6 times and it had primer in it. I guess it was bad or had something wrong with it. Never seen one with out primer.
