I live in Georgia black sea coast ( the country bordering with Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkey )
Since already 7 years I’m interesting of Hunting in Caucasian mountain . in georgian maintain we have ( Goat , Bear , and Wild boar ) ( mountain hunting )
Presently i have Russian made “Mossin” military rifle caliber 7.62 x 54 R . but I’m not satisfied with it because of
1) heavy weight . 2) bad hitting effect , when bullet gets into the game . it doesn’t stops and kills it at ones . what is very dangerous while hunting ( Bear , and Wild boar) 3 ) bad ballistic factors and long-range .
Unfortunately on market we have only Turkish and Russian rifles which is bad quality . due to this reason I decided to apply to you , since I don know a lot about brands and caliber of rifles In USA . can you pls help me to choose the most suitable rifle and caliber in accordance with games at my region
I need :
1) light weight rifle
2) long-range upto 1000 -1300 meters . probably long barrel .
3) good - hit. Killing effect . ( caliber )
4) good ballistic factors .
Games type :
Goat ( Jeep ) - weight up 250 kilograms - shooting distance upto 1000 - 1300 meters
Bear - weight upto 180 – 400 kilograms - shooting distance 100 – 300 meters
Wild boar - weight upto 85 - 300 kilograms - shooting distance 100 – 300 meters
thanks in advance for you recomendations .

Welcome aboard! I'm guessing that vthe poor terminal performance you're having with the 7.62x54R is due to the ammo. I use it quite often on deer and wild hogs up to 350+ lbs with excellent results, although I'm not shooting at extended ranges. I would suggest a Savage in .300 Win. Mag for the long ranges you're considering. A Sako or Tikka would be another excellent choice as would a Remington or Howa.
Hi Vakhop - Welcome to the G & G forum. A pleasure to have someone from your country with us. I would agree with the comments above. I would recommend the best rifle that you can both obtain and afford.
I shoot a Sako (Finnish) and am very pleased with it. (308 caliber) You would, of course, need a scope of at least 8x. Tikka is made by Sako and is somewhat less expensive, but has a sako barrel. Savage rifles are considered very accurate. Any of these with a 3x9 scope and sling would weigh in at around 8 1/2 to 9 lbs (3.8 to 4.1 kg.) The 300 win mag is an
excellent long range gun. 1300 meters might be stretching things a bit far. However, I am pretty conservative (careful) about the distance I will shoot.
Good luck and welcome to the forums.

i agree with every thing posted above excpet i am not a remington 700 fan. i would rather the 7mm remington magnum rather than the .300 in a light rifle due to recoil cause in a light gun in .300 it is a little more than i care for, not saying it is not manegable by any means i just do not like it. to each his own thou 1300 meters should not be to far for either gun. both great calibers
I believe your range beyond 500meters is unrealistic unless you are using one of our ultra mags if you expect to have any killing power when the bullet gets there.I am going mostly by memory but you will find it close. With a .300 Winchester magnum and 180gr bullet leaving the muzzle at 3000fps and energy of 3600lbs you only have about 2000fps and 1650lbs energy at 500yds,about enough to kill a bear or tough hog.At 1000yds you are down to 1300fps and 650 energy, hardly enough to guarrantee a kill on a tough animal. sam.
Firstly the idea of shooting goats at 1000-1300metres is just that, an idea but for shooting Large European game at sensible ranges I think you should be looking at the common proven european calibres.
Personally, in your situation, I would tend to look at a good Mauser actioned rifle in any of the following calibres:
8x68s, 9.3x62, 9.3x64 or .300 winmag.
These are all common European big game cartridges with varied bullet weights and should be reasonably available in your country. (If not available, then a trip to Germany might be in order)
vakhop, do you have access to the CZ Brand of firearms?
I have heard people say in the State of Alaska, USA, the 300 Winmag is the National Rilfe of Alaska. 180 grain Bullet at 500 yards gets there quick!
I am not, personally, a long range shooter, but it seems to me your first two requirements (1. and 2) are incompatible. Long range shooting (1000m) requires a specialized rig; large caliber, moderately heavy barrel, large optics. You will probably end up with a 12-14lb outfit.
There are several sites on the web that cater to long range shooting - the Weatherby Forums has one. Check them out.
