I got my 10/22 used and the last owner painted the stock black. Didnt care for that too much so I sanded it down smooth and stained it Ebony. No poly on it either, I think im going to skip that stem.
Interesting. I'm going to put wood furniture on my AR build. Trying to find a black wood that isn't really heavy is a bit of a challenge. For that matter, black wood alone is a bit of a challenge. Maybe an ebony stain on maple will work. Do you know what kind of wood that stock is?

The typical 10/22 stock, since 1984ish, is birch. It doesn't accept stain well. I've had some success with black dye and then a suitable sealer.
Even RIT fabric dye will work. I've mixed alcohol and Rit which seems to penetrate better than water and Rit.
Experimenting is part of the fun!
