Can you shoot a slug through a shotgun with a modified choke?

This is a bit of a long read, but has some useful info:

http://www.starsandstripesammo.com/e...tgun_slugs.pdf

Page 7 discusses choke sizes & slugs. If you're making your own slugs, it might be best to measure the slug diameter & compare it to the diameter of the choke and the thickness of the shot cup you're thinking of using.

I have a Lyman mold for 525 gr 12 ga. shuttlecock style & load 'em with Blue Dot in Win AA 2-3/4" hulls. Fired through my Winchester Defender, (Cylinder choke) the recoil is very noticeable.

HTH

Well, in all fairness

you would be better off with a rifled slug barrel as that is the path to greater accuracy.

I have seen many foster type slugs shot through full chokes but always thought improved or cylinder bore was a shade more accurate.I don't know about slugs you cast yourself because they might have alloys in them and be harder and not compress like they should.Factory slugs are usually pure lead. sam.

Didn't mention it's a 410 and no slug barrels that I know of... I have a pump and it feels more like rifle than a shotgun and I just want to play around with it.. After all the reason to have em is to make them go bang... I've never seen such a thick barrel on a shotgun.

Good point on the alloys. I've cast most of mine out of wheel weights so I just use 'em in the Defender with it's cylinder barrel. Only plan on using them on 2-legged skunks or milk jugs full of water, old junk cars, etc. Rifles are a much better tool for big game.

You're welcome! Keep in mind, that a .410 slug may not have enough energy for a humane kill on anything much bigger than a coyote or a 2-legged skunk. A pump action .410 must be a real hoot to shoot. I envy you! I have an old single shot Iver Johnson that got a lot of pheasants. It's ancient & beat up beyond belief, but it's still a good old gun. I keep it around for buzzworms. (Prairie rattlers).
