...and I'm wanting to buy a box of ammo for it within the next hour to take to the range tonight. Can anyone verify that .44 magnum = .44 Remington Magnum when buying ammo? I just want to make sure I get the right stuff.
Sorry for the idiot question, but all I'm seeing on the frame and on the Internet is "44 Magnum"
Thanks,
Jason

There is only one 44 mag. It is called the 44 Remington Magnum because it was developed under the remington name. Elmer Kieth designed it, had Smith and Wesson build the gun and Remington to make the bullets.

I once had one. I experimented with handloading till I found my sweet spot in between the .44 mag and the .44 special round. You can find yours, too.
I guess it was like the three bears looking for the bed in the fairy tale.
.44 mag was too much, .44 special not enough, but in between I hit the right power.
Thanks to all for the advice. I just picked up a box of 50 Winchester Whitebox SJSP for $37.50. I do believe I'm going to order dies for this thing first thing tomorrow. Holy crap.

Yeah I imagine they could be a strain on the wallet.

Bully for you! I bought a Ruger Redhawk in 44 mag a couple months ago, been lovin it. GO TO GEORGIA ARMS WEBSITE, they have 240 gr cast bullet load for about 20-22 bucks per 50
You can buy a whole bunch and re-use the brass many times.
Airweight, I've said it before and I'll say it again. There are no stupid questions. When in doubt ask. There are so many knowledgeable people here who are more than happy to help. Have fun with your Pops Ruger.

Just out of curiosity, did you end up loading a hot .44 SPL round or a light .44 magnum round?

There's nothing like a good Super Blackhawk. Yes, You can shoot 44 Russian, 44 Spl and 44Mag. The 44 Mag dies should work for all as the only difference is length. Just remember, it is normal for a single action to roll in the hand, it helps absorbe the recoil. Here's mine.

Just ridiculous isn't it? I cast and reload so when I see this kind of price I just scratch my head wondering why they have to be so high! Buying dies, you'll recoup your investment pretty quick. Congrats on your new gun!
Probably us reloaders that cause the prices to be so high!
Congrats on the newly acquired wheel-gun !! Is your SBH an old or a new model ??
It says "New Model", but I'm sure it's at least 30 years old. Everything's subjective.
Took this out with the whitebox 240g Winchesters and nearly broke the knuckle on my middle finger on the first shot. All that kick and those itty-bitty grips. I have huge hands (wear a size 14 wedding ring), so something had to give there. I ordered a Hogue mono-grip for it that takes up the space behind the trigger guard and lengthen it by an inch. I haven't been home yet to fit it onto the gun, but I'm already rather liking it slightly way better.
I'm not sure what constitutes a "range report" but, I've run a total of 38 factory rounds and 18 reloads through it and I'm already considerably more accurate at 50ft with this 8" barreled monster than with my 4" barreled 686. Site seems to be dead on, but a bit low @ 50ft. Recoil is...yikes. All in all, it's fun. I'll be a lot more enthusiastic when shooting it doesn't cause me pain, I'm sure. But as it stands, I'm very, very happy with it.
