8x57 with good European ammo (Norma, RWS, S&B).
usa loaded ammo for teh 8x57 is just downloaded garbage and not worth the money.
RWS makes loads that supercede the 30-06.
i use one for 35 years and took moose, black & grizzly bear. mt. goat, mule deer,
red stag, pigs....
well, you get the idea.

My favorite cartridge is the 30-06, just for the history that it has in the USA.

Can't agree more!!! It's kind of like golf, you choose the right club for the job at hand.
BUT, if I HAD to choose just one from the calibers I have shot or own, I would have to say either 7mm Mag, or .300 Win Mag. Love them both and they are capable of taking down damn near anything in my neck of the woods!

Wow! And such a difficult task. For me...the Savage 110 in .30-06. A close second is my NEF Handi Rifle (it has for barrels but to keep it fair) in .30-30.
For rimfire - the .22 Marlin Squirrel Rifle.
Shotgun - 12 gauge Mossberg 500...I have two barrels for it. For versatility and affordability ... this ranks up there with the .30-06.
Actually - the All-American gun battery is probably 12 gauge, .22 LR, and you pick your favorite centerfire (.308/.270/.30-06/.7mm Rem. Mag/.300 Win. Mag).
Nuff said.

My favorite caliber is the .308. My favorite cartridge to shoot is the 30-30 (I put venison in the freezer with it last season, and it does a nice job on wild hogs too). Low recoil, cheap and easy to handload, and just a fun old cartridge that gets the job done.
In a bolt gun, I like .308 Winchester the best.
With all of that being said, if I could only have one, I'd choose my 30-06. It can pretty much do it all, at any distance that I am capable of shooting accurately under field conditions.(300yds or less)
I have a hunting buddy who has killed every major game animal in NA except an Alaskan brown, or Griz. His house looks like Cabela's, with all the mounts everywhere. He's killed coyote, bobcat, pronghorn, many whitetail, mule deer, elk, black bear, caribou, several buffalo, & a moose. He only hunts with the 30-06, period. He owns a lot of guns and calibers, but when he hunts, 30-06 is what he takes. It's hard to argue with success.

I will also echo the feelings of the .30-30 - I would feel suitably armed for anything in the lower 48 (yes, even moose, I just need to convince them to smell the muzzle first).
I think the gun/cartridge I have secretly loved for quite some time is the 7.92x57 (8mm Mauser) in it's Mauser 98 embodiment. There is just something magical about those military mauser actions.

I have shot a 7x64 for a good 25 years but my new .325 WSM is causing me to retire the Styer.
I have just returned from African and shot everything from Eland on down with one shot kills, I should be a poster boy for Kimber rifles using AccuBonds the PH there told me that in 22 years he had never seen a cartridge perform as well as the 325.
