there are always lots of questions on what the best caliber is and in most cases everyone just states what they have stating its the best for the job without having experience with other calibers ill admit im biast towards the weatherby calibers but i have shot many different calibers every caliber seems to have an effective use be it cost or long range or short range ect... ok back to topic what is your favorite caliber for what ever you use it for be it the most used gun you own or just the one you enjoy shooting the most
my favorite gun i own is my synthetic markV 257 weatherby i am willing to use it for any game in north america i love that the recoil is next to none it has great stoping power in every animal iv shot and IMHO i love the available bullet weights
LoL i am the opposite, as you said everyone has their favorite, I am biased against weatherby cartridges, my favorite caliber is .308 winchester. But favorite rifle is a complete custom rifle, Sako action, douglas premium barrel, hand cut stock and hand checkered, chambered in .257 roberts.
^ WOW A custom built on a Sako action in one of my all time favorite hunting cartridges for deer. I am jealous !!
My two favorites right now are the 6,5x55 Swede, which is just a fabulous round, and the good old 300 Win Mag.
"and in most cases everyone just states what they have stating its the best for the job without having experience with other calibers" Jet- Aren't you doing the exact same thing ??
"i am willing to use it for any game in north america"
Jet- I wanna be there when you take a big coastal Brownie, or one of our Buffalo with your 257 Wby !! Not real close, just there, LOL !!

i didnt think i said the 257 was the best just that its my favorite i have owned a bunch of different calibers that were only used on deer 300 win mag 30-30 308 243 and my apoligies i would be willing to shoot a big brown with my 257 but i wouldnt do it i own a 30-378 weatherby im compleatly aware that the 257 isnt a stoping caliber on animals of that size
I don't own a wthby 257 but, one of the men I hunt with does. I have shot it and love it. It is, in my opinion, the best deer rifle for Southern AR. It has great takedown power and range (many of the shots that we take are over 250 yards). As soon as I can afford one (they are not cheap) I will purchase one. currently I use a Rem model 700 30-06, good rifle as well.
I heard stories of a guy that hunted elephants and other big game animals with a 7X57, shot placement.
Ivory hunters right after the big war used all kinds of military rifles to kill elephants because of the availability of FMJ,s and the fact that they didn't have to drop them on the spot, just put a lot of bullets in them and they died in an hour,a day,or a week. All they wanted was ivory and it didn't rot. This was a very sad period in hunting, almost comparing to the buffalo hunts.I don't understand why these slaughterer,s of animals are considered hero,s in any way.Maybe there was a reason for both slaughters but I can't bring myself to honor the people that did it. sam.

It wasn't the seven five seven
That sent our poor hunter to heaven
His reasoning was not very sound
For it isn't sold by the pound.
So after much stomping, stomping and stomping
Our lad became one with the ground.

Now favorite calibre, I don't have one so much as I do have a favorite bullet dia. The 6.5, now that is a killing machine. Although I've taken a real shine to the 260 as a good way to use the 6.5

I have to say that .308 is my favorite caliber out of my .30-.378 Weatherby. I am a big fan of just about everything .308. I have to admit though that .264 is giving it a run for the money though.

Being a gunsmith and builder of custom rifles I probably have shot more different caliber rifles than most men have ever seen much less owned, that being said I don't have a favorite caliber because there are so many that will do the job of taking game in a quick a humane manner that matching the caliber to the job is more important to me than the caliber it self.
