Okay, I bought some .308/7.62 x 51 ammo at a gun show, I saw it once, a few years back. It's in a light greyish box, staples on both sides with a linen type string to tear open the top flap. The verbage on the label looks to be arabian style. Please help, is it corrosive? Okay to shoot? Regards
It's Pakistani non corrosive from the Eighties. They sealed the bullets with tar instead of lacquer. It won't hurt your barrel, it just takes a bit more time to get a clean barrel when the time comes. After you shoot it up search around for silver bear or prvi partisan. Both are still running cheaper than the others and extremely good quality.
Blessings
Thanks Bugfligger, that's good to know, good to know about the other ammo too. These were 5 bucks for 15 rds, I thought there were 20 rds, my mistake, know better now. The Wolf cheap stuff was $10 a box of 20 last week end. I miss the battle paks of 140 rds of South Africa at $25 that I got back in 2007 [makes me cry to see the prices today] That's why I'm always L@@King for that great buy...

Okay, I'm back, I have a couple of boxes I got today at an auction for about $2.00 each. they are in a white box, with 20 rds per box. The description on the box is R.G. .31 12 89A data A4/1818 20 RDS,7.62mm ball L2A2 (a black dot and dot with a + in it) the ammo looks great. Is it okay? Is it corrosive? Who made it? The base has RC and 89 a circle withe the + in it. Regards!
(the auction was a bunch of fun can't wait to go to more)
The circle with a + in it is the symbol for "NATO" rounds, so you have 7.62x51NATO, likely brass-cased and boxer primed and fully reloadable (though, that's questionable after being ejected from a CETME ).
The RG headstamp is for British rounds, so it's British 7.62NATO made in 1989 (that's what the 89 is).
The likelihood of NATO rounds being corrosive is not high, but it is a slight possibility... though even more unlikely from the Brits in 1989. I would say you are good to shoot that and if it doesn't dent the cases to unusability, I'd definitely save the ammo for reloading or selling to reloaders.

Thanks Just_A_Car, it's been a long while since I've made contact w/you! Hope all is well with you. You won't believe the stuff I got in a box for $30.00, there are 180,150 and 220 gr .308 bullets, .44 bullets, .45 bulllets, ammo (stuff I can't use but will be using for trading mat'l ) I should have stuck with bidding on a box of .45 ACP and kept from buying the .44 specials (3 boxes may have been 2 to 2.5 full ) some great deals some mistakes on my behalf...it's totally fun. I can't pass up on these 7.62 x 51 small deals. I keep looking to you're guy's xpert knowledge----thanks a bunch! Going to get back into reloading looks like. I need to get back to the shooting range to see if I can find any "treasures".

All is doing okay with me, LakerDad. Glad to hear you're having so much fun with the auctions.
You'll notice the new line in my signature, so there's a little new with me. Finally finished.
...and I'm glad to help out with the research on those. I don't consider it "expert knowledge", I just knew where to find the info out on the intar-webs.

I saw a green stang, tell me more about her, the guns still look great. I saw today where J & G sales had the British 7.62 x 51 ammo on sell--750rds at $450. I got in my little box of goodies a partial box of 220 .308 soft points can't wait to try reloading them for my 06, I have the .22 excellerators at 55 grs, some 90 grs prinkers, 110 varmiters, 125's, 150's, 165's, 180's, military and now these 220's, I saw where you might use 220's in the 7.62x39's, that'll make them kick up for sure.
That's my 1972 Mach1 Mustang, 351 Cleveland 2bbl, switched to a 4bbl Holley double-pump with electric choke and mechanical secondaries feeding into an Edelbrock Performer intake. Replaced the 2.75:1 with a 3.25:1, both non-posi fed from the FMX tranny. I intend on putting in an AOD tranny feeding into a 4.11:1 posi-trac (all of which I have in my possession).
Also replaced the points with Pertronix electronic ignition. She's also got new wheels (16" 7-spoke, split-spoke) from Pep Boys (for around $85 a pop) with nice tires to match. Switched most of the brake lines out to stainless pipes and steel-braided for the hoses; still need to replace the long one that goes back to the splitter block on the rear axle.
She was originally sold at Duncan Ford-Lincoln-Mercury in Key West, FL (which is still open) and somehow wound up here in WA State. I emailed the dealership and the V.P. responded, the daughter of the owner, who believes it was their show model that she drove around back when she was 17.
As you can see on the ammo, you got a screaming deal... robbed 'em blind, even.
I have considered using the 220 gr. .308's for loading sub-sonics in the x39 round, but I really want to try the 240 gr. MatchKing bullets from Sierra, since if you're going below a certain velocity (speed of sound) the only way to increase energy is to increase mass. Plus, I have a feeling that, even though the 1-in-10" twist that is likely in the AES-10 barrel is usually rated up to 220 gr., I would imagine that the 23 3/8" barrel might be enough to stabilize it, as opposed to the 16-18" barrel of normal AK's.

Thanks J_A_C, good photos! And I know that's the same car as before right? How long have you had her? I showed the wife and daughter [they enjoy guns and cars as well]. My friend in KC had a blue Mach 1 '70/72 I think. You like the 7.62 x 54R's? runs along the same lines as the .308/7.62 x 51. How the sniper shoot? Thanks again for the feedback and pics
