Snake hunting? That is a new one to me. I usually just shoot the rattlers when they are on my property and let the other ones go. I don't know if there are any laws for it, you would have to contact the NM department of game and fish to find out. As far as the gun goes, you can keep it loaded and on the dashboard of your truck and nobody would/should care. You do have to have a permit to carry it concealed but open carry is fine. You can walk down main street with a rifle on your back and it is perfectly legal. Though, the new inexperienced LEO's might think up a law for it on the spot.

Cool

New Mexico considers your vehicle to be an extention of your home. You may carry loaded and concealed in your vehicle, but unless you have a concealed carry you must display it when you exit the vehicle.

A license to kill snakes? That's a new one to me too. We were killing rattlers, copperheads and moccasins by the bushel load until our side of the island got developed. I don't think we were breaking any laws.

I would guess that snake hunting would fall under the varmint regulations and since the only snakes that might make the roads dangerous at night are the two legged variety, I don't think you have too much to worry about. Truth be told, I've never heard of any snake hunting regulations of any kind, either.

BTW, the prairie rattler, which is the dominant pit viper species here, are so shy and non aggressive, you rarely see them, let alone have to kill them. The Wetern diamondback is a little more aggressive, but is much less common. I've covered nearly every part of NM and while over the years, I've seen a fair number of snakes, given the fact that they are great varmint controllers, I almost never kill them. Also given how much time I've spent hunting and fishing NM, I think you're going to find it more difficult to find the snakes than you think.
