That's why we look more to initial passive security.

To my understanding the firearm should be the last line of defense. Remember defense should be like an Onion, concentric rings within rings.

I reckon that everybody who keeps a gun for home defense should spend some time reviewing their static home defense, ie. lights, doors, windows, locks, gates, grills etc. If you've got a door & locks that some guy wearing sneakers can kick in in 5 seconds, for goodness sake do something about it.
I have two Daughters and a Wife to defend and as such, the firearm will always be my FIRST line of defense in my house. As soon as my Daughter turns 18, she will be permitted a firearm in her room also. If someone wants in your house, they'll get there regardless of security. If they come in uninvited, they ARE up to NO GOOD, and will leave MY house in a body bag.

By bedside system is pretty simple. Remington 870 12ga, a Glock 21.

#3 FNH FNP9. well the old 9mm no 40 or 45 I own one of both but get this its loaded with HP's and it holds17 of them. My brother put it the best when he said I have 17rounds with my 9 double taps are very easy to pull off. chances to hit the guy 10-25% of rounds outa a pistol accutally hit. I have 17 chances to get back to my rifle I bet I can keep thier head down with 17 rounds.
What do you think?
That's my current choice.....

geez, I feel so outdated! All I keep loaded is my .38 special snubby (currently stuffed with vintage 200 grn lrn's) and my Marlin 1894 (so I can shoot through my walls AND my neighbors walls). No kids in the vicinity, and I am not that enamored with my neighbors (j/k)

Depending on gender and age...... Train them how to use them and keep 'em shooting regularly. They then will look at it as a tool instead of a toy.

This worked for my kids starting at ages 8 and 11 (girls) and they love to shoot.

Depends on the kid. Case by case basis I would think. It never turned into an issue while I was growing up, but I knew which ones were loaded and not to mess with any of them regardless.

My house is certainly harder to break into my neighbors house. That is because I am worried about someone stealing my stuff while I am not there. When I am home my windows are open and my door is unlocked and my first line of defense will be a gun.

Bedroom: 1911A1, 1911 officers, a .25 auto, .38 Taurus (clone of the model 10) and an Ithica M37.

People like us are armed and secure, we sleep soundly at night until the shoulder and hip starts hurting. I take an Aleve, check the doors, look at the attack cat sleeping, and go back to bed.

Generally either a Para P14 or a P16, with a Rossi Overland in case I'm playing "Fort Apache, My Bedroom." M1 Carbine in the closet, just for warm fuzzies. Lots of nastier stuff in the safe, if the zombies rise.

Cool Break-ins

Howdy,

I carry a Ultra Compact SA .45 ACP, with Crimson Trace Grips & JHP's. Grips are sighted-in at 42', 1 end of house to the other. This is by my head, on night stand. In the closet, is a web gear with another SA GI SPEC 5", with Crimson trace Grips, same sight-in, pouch with 2 magazines with JHP's, U.S. Navy Kabar, pouch with 10 rounds of 00 buck, and my Mossburg 590A1, with alternating 00 and slugs.

Wife carries her S&W 908, 9MM and a '97 Winchester in 16 gauge.

The first line of defense is the 3 dogs, 10# Llasa Opso, the ankle biter, the 30# Chichihua, the knockover tripper and the 50# Border Collie/Pit Bull, the no fear throat biter. If they get thru the dogs, they have a fire fight on their hands, with no holds barred. They come in "uninvited" and leave in a "bodybag."

Jkrzos

My 1911 beats a 911 call!

I have my mossy 500 and XD 45 within arms reach both cocked and locked with 00 buck and 230gr Hornady TAP +P, on the opposite side of my bed than my door, so I at least have a chance to make him guess where im gonna pop up...If he gets to my room that is. My house consists of three long hallways that connect the living areas from the bedrooms and the easiest entry points, our sliding glass doors, are far enough to give me a head start.

Making house more secure isn't of much value out here in the boondocks. If the door or window breaks, I have a 45acp at ny right hand, the wife my 44 mag revolver in reach of both of us and a 12 ga. at the side of the door way. if it gets worse, the gun cabinet is full of loaded rifles and other shot guns. I din't keep my children safe from guns but safe with guns. Theirs were in their rooms and loaded. I've never locked up my guns. I want them all loaded and ready.

No need to laugh if you are proficent and it is comfortable to shoot then that would, make you better armed than someone with a weapon that they are not proficent with.

Any gun is better than no gun! I have to say that I have used break action styles of guns for many many years and could easily operate one in the dark if I had to. Not to mention that short barrel should keep your gun shorter than a yardstick - handy, rugged, dependable, nothing to sneeze at!
