I've been told by a dealer and a couple distributors that Ruger has shut down its plant.
They have no idea why or for how long.
Has anyone else heard this bit of news?

If they are shut down note it is sometimes necessary in manufacturing and refining operations to stop operations for maintenance and/or retooling of certain machines/processes.
Haven't heard anything about that. Let's see here....don't they have two factories....one in Conn. and the other in Arizona? They ought to keep cranking out the semi-autos because there is unmet demand out there all over the place.

Hopefully if they are shut down, they will rethink their quality issues. They will quit with the cheap way and crap they have turned out lately.
I saw some new 10/22's the other day and the machineing was rough and did not even look finished on the bolt and reciever. I have a few old ones and they came new looking new. I love rugers but seeing and hearing about all their recent problems the past few years has me worried to buy another one.
right now gun manufactures can't keep up production.demand outstrips supply.barrak hussein bin laden or whatever his name is has done more for gun sales than anybody since billary clinton.i haven't bought a ruger in a couple of years but one thing i do like about them is all their guns are still made in America;unlike remington,weatherby,etc.i hope this was just a retool,maintance type shutdown.now if ruger would just come out with a waterfowl semi-auto.....

I agree. I'm hoping that this is mostly hype (and tend to think that it is) and am patiently waiting to buy more guns until after the hype goes down and the prices drop back down to what they should be.
i have heard the new "stimulus bill" contains gun control measures. i don't know if this is true or not.i would think as gun manufactures are employing thousands of tax paying workers the government would not idle even more citizens.but then i'm not a liberal and may not be able to see their logic.

Your first mistake - thinking they use any form of logic. Rampant "Emotionalism" all the way! Makes it easier to get the Sheeple aroused.
The bad thing is, ALL the gun companies have seen quality go down the toilet - they are run by the Bean Counters now - cut corners to maximise profit, and when sales fall off due to low QC, then discontinue that product.
Notice all the bigname gun companies are selling cutlery and sports apparel now? Diversifying their market, so they have something to sell when they no longer make guns.
I've been hearing all kinds of rumors like this lately. from ammo manufactures stopping production to drive up prices, ammo and gun manufacturers scaling back production, skyrocketing ammo and gun taxes, (that may happen, but nothing on the horizon yet in congress)
it's all panic driven hype. companies are out to make money, they are turning out products as fast as possible to capitalize on the buying frenzy. they are not going to sacrifice corperate profits by shutting down during such a very lucerative time.
I talked to someone on friday on the phone, I believe it was their Arizona office #, nothing mentioned about a shutdown.
I wouldn't put very much clout in what Ruger tells you on the phone. I asked somebody about the LCP recall about a week before it happened and they denied it up and down. I find it hard to believe that I heard a rumor here on G&G about the recall and the folks working at Ruger didn't know.
That being said, I can't believe that any gun manufacturer would close shop now. Their sales are probably at an all time high and they're one of the few businesses that are thriving in this economy. Then again...who knows?

Fear and ignorance is a wonderful sales tool. Manipulation in the marketplace based on our own prejudices and baseless fears.........at it's finest.

According to the "rumor", it is the AZ plant in Prescott that is closed.
I've heard little more on the issue.
