Tragic, and they are going to try him as an adult. Three lives ruined. I wonder if the boy had been taught gun safety, would the outcome been different.

Gun safety didn't really figure it this from what I read. Apparently, this is being looked at as a case of premeditated murder. It’s not politically correct to say this, but there appeared to be a dysfunctional family environment in the works here. The victim was eight months pregnant by a live-in boyfriend and both adults had children of various ages. The boy was familiar with guns and even competed in a turkey shoot recently so I have to assume he knew what he was doing. It is tragic what happened here, and it’s tragic that the breakdown of the traditional family will promote more of this behavior. Our whole society is on the ropes because of this breakdown.
Yeah, I think the problem was in the kid's head, not in his "access" to a shotgun.
As I pointed out in another thread, I grew up with seven brothers and sisters. We all knew where the guns were and how to use them from an early age, and it didn't warp our little minds...

You sure bout that Troy?? I'm sure the others are fine though.
I'm interested in hearing what the motive was. As a general rule, 11 yr. olds aren't prone to cold-blooded murder just for the heck of it.
Shades of Bloom County! Is that weapons delivery system in your avatar an actual Basselope? I thought they had gone extinct--from high cholesterol and clogged arteries, mostly. Basselopes like Pop Tarts...

I don't think age has a lot to do with it. Most 11 year olds probably would have managed the uncertainty and the lifestyle that this 11 year old was living in. They might not have liked it, they might have acted up or got into some other trouble, but they wouldn't have killed the woman. In a much better environment, this guy would probably still been trouble, probably not as much, but trouble none-the-less.
Troy, OBVIOUSLY the problem was in the kids head. ALL THE MORE REASON KIDS SHOULDN'T HAVE ACCESS TO FIREARMS! YA' JUST NEVER KNOW WHAT'S IN THEIR HEAD AND LET'S FACE IT, AT EVERY AGE, NOT JUST AT !!yrs. OLD, PEOPLE HIDE WHAT THEY'RE FEELING AND THINKING. Do you think this would have happened had he not had access to it? I think we both know it still might have, but not with that or any other firearm had he NOT had access to it or them. Sure, if he wanted to do it, take her life, he could and would have found some other way..
Taking a wild guess, I'd have to say he was feeling left out and or picked and or resented this person taking the place of his mom. Or she scolded him and he didn't feel she had the right to or she scolded him and it made him mad.
Either way, it comes down to this kid had emotional problems, as most CHILDREN do; And all the more reason CHILDREN SHOULD NOT HAVE IMMEDIATE READILY AVAILABLE ACCESS TO ANY FIREARM!
And it's the accidental and premeditated things of this nature that fuel the anti-gunners fight.
With that said, in regards to another thread on here about another shooting, I think we, I already have) need to email the media and tell them it was merely a semi-auto rifle used and NOT an assault rifle. Because in watching the news this weekend and early this morning, they're throwing the term "assault rifle" around like crazy. Most every news broadcast I watched that reported on this shooting, used that term.
So I think others besides myself need to send an email to the Chicago media, Fox WFLD channel 32 Chicago, CBS channel 2 Chicago, NBC channel 5 Chicago, ABC channel 7 Chicago and WGN channel 9 Chicago and let them know this term they're using isn't accurate.

GM, I think that Troy's point is that there are 11 year olds, and younger who grew up with guns as a prominent factor in the home. My brother and I were certainly among them. I'll take it further and say that the family structure in America, for the most part, was more in line with married parents, and siblings who were close to each other outside of the usual sibling feuds that ended harmlessly. While none of us know all of the details right now, I can't help but get a picture of a very dysfunctional environment starting with a man and his eight month pregnant girlfriend who was living in her house while their children are forced to "play house" with them. While it is obvious that the boy was unstable and had stepped over the edge, it is likely he would not have stepped so far over the edge in a better and more stable home environment. While he should be held accountable, the tragedy is that there are plenty of dysfunctional family structures out there and the PC society is trying to blow it off as another alternative lifestyle. I don't think it is a long shot to say that if the couple had been married, they would have treated each other more as family members and problems could have been worked out; not totally perhaps, but enough to keep people from getting shot. I think you know however that the media won’t focus on that, but rather the availability of the shotgun. Certainly the leftists in the new congress, urged on by their media shrills will get as much mileage as they can. I will certainly be challenging news articles on discussion boards and doing my part to counter their lies.
I know that SightNSqueeze. My point was the times then were and are far different then they are now. We need and sometimes have to adjust and make changes especially when we have children killing people, their parents being tried as a child/juvenile or adult. Trust me, I know back then it WAS NOT the norm for people to kill people; let alone a thought in the mind of an adult let alone a child.

Agreed. For now, adjustments in gun handling have to be made, but society as a whole has to be restored to what it once was or unattended band-aid approaches will become festering wounds. The problem includes a wide ranging list of social ills from attempts to redefine marriage and the structure of the western family, to individual responsibilities toward others, to how we want the world to perceive us as a nation and as a western society.
The problem is a huge dysfunctional social dynamic that has been in the works since the 1960’s.
On the local news, he the little boy that shot the live in was telling her months previous to his action he was going to shoot her. Although he is not tried yet some other bad news is that they found the 20 ga. in his room with a blanket and a hole in it the size of the barrel opening with burn marks around the perimeter. Don't look good. I think they may
press charges on the father also, he had to know about his sons intentions.
