I have a new model Blackhawk that I've had for years. my eyesight isn't what it use to be and I wanted to put a different sight on the front. problem is I can't find one.
can the original not be changed out?
otherwise, I'm going to find some brite colored paint.
I absolutely hate the front sight they put on their single actions. I wish they would come with a partridge type front sight. I know somebody makes them as I have looked into them but I can't for the life of me think of who makes them. I'll do a little looking around and see if I can find them again.

Bright sight makes a paint kit you can buy. The fiber optic front sights are really nice. I have three of them now and they are a great aid. I like the green.

I have my wife pick up the brightest colors of nail polish and use it on my front sight. It is less expensive than some of the paints and dries very hard.
It is easy to use and last and easy to touch up when needed.
Whole boat load of different colors.
I can't figure how the front blade is removed on the Blackhawk. I would expect it to be cross pinned but don't see it (maybe my eyesight again). my security six is cross pinned so it's going to be an easy fix. some guns I have already changed over and it has been a big help. just wish i could fix this blackhawk. guess i'm going to use paint on it for now till i figure out something else.
deadzero: Sir; Check behind the blade; Depending on which?? model; the base is screwed into the barrel.
Finger nail polish is a good coating and here; I don't tell her
Most?? of the old ones; they all shot high with certain loads and heavier loading the sights pulled down. Once a proper load was found then the front sight was filed to zero.
Its a new model blackhawk production 1992. chambered in 45LC., 7 1/2" barrel. no screws or pins visable even with magnifing glass, (them eyes again). going to try the fingernail polish or something like it for now, till i figure something out. maybe try and call Ruger. it does show the base and blade as seperate parts on the list, just can't figure how it secures to each other.
The front sight is silver soldered on most every SA Ruger (8) I have, the ROA and stainless Bisley are the only exceptions.
You used to be able to buy an insert kit. You would file a dovetail in the front blade and fill it with a liquid that hardened. Came out looking like the front inserts on a Smith. I'm going to look for one.

I have done the hard inserts years ago, like the first link Steve posted. The kit with the acrylic looks rather fool proof. The hard style inserts always made my swear, a real pita trying to press it into the dovetail you cut with out marking the sight blade or bending to very tip if you didn't leave enough metal.
I puckered a little when I saw the price, but after logging in and seeing the dealer price I think I well order that set. You should be able to do a few dozen blades with an oz of acrylic.
Good job Steve, thanks.

I did a quick search and it looks like that Brownell's kit is the only thing on the market.
Steve, it's not hard to do. With the barrel in a vise, make your initial cuts with a Dermel. Finish with a triangle file. I would then polish up the blade because it well need to be cold blued when your done. Use the acrylic as shown, finish and polish the insert, then cold blue.
When I cold blue small parts I heat them with a heat gun, (hair drier) just warm, not hot, before and the cold blue seems to work much better, nice even color.
I have a very small dovetail cutter for my mill so I can cheat after making the first cuts.
If you have a really good drill press you could drill a hole in the blade and fill it with the acrylic, kind of look like a dot sight.
You just need to have every thing squared up good.
