Choosing a scope???

I just bought a smith & Wesson model 57 41 Mag. with a 6" barrel. I do a lot of pig hunting with a rifle, I've killed alot of hogs over 100 yards, but I've taken 5 or 6 at under 50 yards. I've never used a hand gun as my primary hunting weapon, but always thought about it. What do you guy's think of this gun for a pig hunting weapon? What would be about the maximum range for a shot? Also I've never looked into a scope for a handgun. Where do I start? and what would do I look for, How cheap can I go? ( I bought this hangun and a remington 11 48 12 guage in the last three day's ) so I have to figure a way to get the scope and mounts and still keep the wife.

Scope

Sargent,
I hadn't thought about color? But the link you sent was a $44 scope?? Will something like that work? I'm used to spending several hundred for my rifle scopes.

Thanks, Mel

As I said on your other posting I would look at a Burris or Leopold. The extra is well spent, I had a Burris and it was a very nice scope, expect to lay out a couple hundred and the scope will last for many years.

scope

Sargent,
thanks I'm going to look in to them. One question, never having looked through a scope on a pistol, can you see through the lens at full arm length? I'm 6'3" with long arms.

Spend the extra money and get a 2-6X Bushell or 1.5-4X Burris. You'll be glad you did. Use the lowset setting for hunting and keep the highest for the range.

buy a quality scope with a nice i relief you dont want to bend your arms to see threw your scope its not a pretty sight when you squeeze the trigger in that form. buy al leopold scope its worth the money and you will never have a problem and if you do its a lifetime warranty. and another thing with a handgun you need to pick the right ammo due to the slower feet per second in this gun you dont want that bullet expanding right away when it hits. you need a load that has a delayed expansion..

I first put a scope on a Ruger Blackhawk in the 1970. Couldn't find factory pistol mounts at the time so I had it drilled and tapped for Weaver bases. It worked well. Now I have a new model Blackhawk with factory bases. It shoots fine too. I have not tried it on pigs but on other game it does the job out to 100 yards. My scope is a BSA 2 X 20.

You definitely want to go with a quality handgun scope. A Bushnell, Burris or Leopold are the ones I have used and not had problems. I have three, soon to four scoped magnums. Buy the best mounts you can. Hand guns beat the crap of of scopes and mounts.
I recommend the Weigand mounts. Most revolvers made after 92 well already be drilled under the rear sight for this mount. I recommend his rings too. I would use three rings for a .41 mag hunting gun. Give Jack a call he well discount a package deal.
Clamp on mounts for anything larger than a 357 move around. If you go higher than 2X magnification you amplify your movement considerably. 2X plus really does better from a rest.

I have a 7 1/2" stainless Redhawk in .44 mag with a Leupold 2x scope. I can get palm sized groups out at 50 yards, and can close that to 2" off a rest. The scope works fine, no fogging, no moving, using the Ruger rings.

I just got a DW .357. The long barrel has a solid ribbed shroud. I am beginning to look for scope rings that would mate up well with the rib, but would plan to drill through the rings and into the rib, then tap the rib for a screw to hold each ring in place. How thick is the steel on the rib, or is the shroud solid steel through to the hole for the barrel proper? Would a single screw in each ring be beefy enough to hold things in place?

When I scoped my Trooper, I drilled and tapped the top of the frame near the barrel, and also in the rear sight recess. It worked just fine -- I even had loads that ruined a standard Bushnell Phantom, and Bushnell sent me a free Magnum Phantom replacement for it. But the mounts held through it all well enough to let me take a groundhog at 135 yards.

Sorry for the hijack, but at least it's on topic.
