Also, don't be suprised to find that all you need is a coat in the morning/evening and t-shirt during the day...the first time I hunted here i got quite a shock that i spent most of my day sweating to death cause i didn't have light clothes...(first year i hunted wyoming it averaged 80 during the day)

Yeah just depends really, I mean it could be 60-80 during the day or it could be 20 below during the day.

I was talking to my buddy to day and he said that the ranch is in the NE corner area west from rapid city SD. close to a mountian that was used in a movie.

Hmmm, not entirely sure where that is but it sounds like you'll be huntin in the Western edge of the Black Hills. Be sure to stop by Buffalo here and eat a burger at The Dash Inn. Best place in town for a burger or fried chicken.

I would take your 270 sighted in zero at 200 yards with 130 grain core lokt. I used a 30-06 in Wyoming and always used 150 grain core lokt. Took mulies, whitetail and antelope.

Archetype, I hunted west of Kaycee but it has been quite a few years. Never went to the Dash Inn but will when I get back out there. I have a friend who has a house in Buffalo and did check on it for him once. We normally camp on a ranch but the woner died and now it is with an outfitter. Oh well, we sure had some fun times in Wyoming, you are lucky to live in that state. Mark

Don't be afraid.

Go with an new wsm 30cal or a full size mag A big 7mm maybe . ive hunted for over 30 years and stood and watched skilled hunters take game at some distance 400yrds and then some . Sure Ive taken game with 243, 06, 7mmremmag 270 and most recently 300REMIGNTON ULTRA MAG WICH I LOVE. Mule deer in wyoming are very large and very tough. and getting close enough may be harder than you think. if you hunt rolling hills, low brush some times theres so many eyes watching . even at 257 yards. my 243 or 300? no doubt if i drive 1298mi everthing counts when i pull that trigger why put anything at risk. 300 goes BooM. but you have to shoot whatever you shoot well and thats the most important

sounds like your are going to have good time. i would agree with everyone that your 270 is plenty of rifle. i personally like to use my 243 for deer and that has plenty of power.

what is wrong with the way antelope taste? it's not ribeye i know, but it doesn't taste that bad.

Too tough, sagey and too bleh of a taste. But then again I was raised on White-tail and elk that went from hay and alfalfa pastures in the summer to my dad's freezer in the winter. That wasn't on private land either.

I have had great luck with eating antelope. I only eat the does because the bucks have a gaminess to them, and I get them to the meat processor within an hour of the kill. Lots of people rave about how good my antelope steaks and burgers are.

Its just off I25 2nd exit in town. Bein you're from Land O' Lakes it would be the first exit from Gillette, WY and just follow that road past the next overpass and its immediately on your right.

Cwd

Depending on how far away from the SD line you get, there is a Chronic Wasting Disease issue for deer and elk. The counties of Crook (Sundance), Weston (Newcastle), Niobrara (Lusk), Goshen (Torrington), Platte (Wheatland), Laramie (Cheyenne), Alabany (Laramie), Carbon (Rawlins), Converse (Douglas), and the southern half of Natrona (Casper) all have exhibited cases of Chronic Wasting Disease in the deer populations, both mulies and whitetail.

The State of Wyoming does not refund or replace tags or any other expenses if your animal tests positive for CWD. The CDC recommends that any animal testing positive for CWD not be used for human consumption.

AND you shouldn't mount any animal's rack that test positive either.

Personally, I have quit hunting deer and elk in these areas. I'm not trying to scare anybody away from hunting in Wyoming, I just think anyone hunting here should be informed of the risk.

Just something to think about.

Wish I did also. I love the Buffalo area. Especially Crazy Woman Creek Canyon. One of my favorite places in the state. I could take or leave the east and south sides of Johnson Co. Sagebrush just doesn't trip my trigger.

I am not all that fond of goat either, but you should try some from the wheat strips around the Cheyenne area. It tastes completely different than the sagebrush goat I've had from Carbon County. You can almost eat it without drinking a six pack before. Still not my favorite, but I think I could survive on it if the rats and grubworms were all gone.

Hope your hunting season goes well. We aren't doing much this year, just some good South Dakota pheasant hunting on Dad's dairy farm. Draw deadlines snuck up on me and I missed all the good stuff. Oh well, there's always next year.
