I have been researching the Taurus 1911 because when they release the model with the rail on it I was planning on getting one. Well talking to my buddy last night I mention that I am planning on getting one when it comes out. And he tells me that his buddy had one, and it recently (2 weeks ago) blew up in his hand. Apparently the gun is pretty much destroyed, they have it at a gunsmith now to try and figure out what went wrong.

You will hear good and bad about every gun out there. I would rent one and decide yourself. Everyone has their own "Expert Opinions" on everything. I gun I love you might hate and a gun I hate you might love. There are miloins of people who swear by Glock and millions of people who wouldn't take one for free. Which is right?
Back to the topic. I love Taurus. I just shot mine today.
7 out of 10 bad reviews come from "someone who heard about..." or someone who thinks that the brand they own is the best and original. Every manufacturer that is in business today has had one of their guns "ka-boom" at one time or another, for one reason or another. Most of the time it is operator error, regardless of manufacturer.
Get the details, inspect "YOUR" gun of choice, and make an informed decision.

Well the "someone who heard about" argument might be a good point here, but my friend was actually standing next to this guy when the gun blew apart . I don't know specifically what type of ammunition he was using but he never used reloads and always bought box ammo.
I will see what I can do about getting pictures.

i have seen a "blown" smth model 10, a colt 1911, a ruger kp-91, 2 glocks, and a savage bolt action .22.....all owned by others......and have read of many more........
ammo problems to say the least. The smith, colt, and ruger with reloads.
The glocks and savage with factory ammo.
personally, i'm afraid the quality of ammo might get worse as they try to rev up production for the demand......

Well I went to buy my 1911 today and was looking for a SA mil-spec. Nobody had them and I couldn't order them. Last place I went all they had was the Taurus 1911. I know that story my buddy told me freaked me out, but these guys told me that it was probably bad ammo and basically convinced me to get one.
Well first thing I do with any gun when I bring it home is take it apart and clean it. Mostly just to make sure that I can before I shoot it. So take the gun apart (no problem). And start to clean the gun. Everything is going fine till I get to the barrel. I take a look at the barrel and the feed ramp is all chipped and warped. Take a few more seconds of looking at it and notice, what looks like internal crinkling in the metal. Here are some pictures I took of it. Hope they aren't too large, but I kinda had to zoom in on them to show the details I was talking about.
Thats it for pictures.

I am totally with you on that one. I am going to see what I can do about getting the mil-spec after I return this one. If I can't get that then I guess I will be stuck with the GI model, because those are the only 2 really in my price range.

Those pictures are horrifying, aris. I used to work in a machine shop running a big reamer and sometimes a drill bit would break while the part was being made, that looks like what happened. Usually you hear a goddawful racket and toss the last part milled, but people sticking metal tubes in a machine can screw up and not do the right thing.
Instead of returning the pistol, why not order a new barrel? Cheaper Than Dirt has barrels with the barrel link for $60. You might have to buff it with a wire wheel a bit to get good fit, but it might be worth a try if the pistol fits you well otherwise.

Well for one it is a brand new gun, not even in my posession for 24 hours. I shouldn't need to buy replacement parts yet. Two, between what happened to my buddys friend and my own personal experience the Taurus 1911 is officially off my list until I am convinced they have their act together. Third, for those that do believe in fate/signs etc this is a clear indicator that I should not get a Taurus at this time.

i have owned several taurus's . the 9mm copy of the beretta 92. a 608 357, and a copy of a smith 357 with a 4 in barrel.. all shot well and were made well.. have you call taurus directly, to see what they say about it.. tell them you can email pics.. i have looked at the taurus 1911 and have wanted to get one. now i am not so sure anymore.. that being said.. i have heard some good things about RIA 1911s. just a basic mil spec gun. but a good shooter, i have a mil spec springfield.. it is acurate and shoots great. another one that you cant go wrong on.
^ Good call. You get a new some thing or another it should not have to be reworked, parts replaced. Send it back and get a KIMBER, or the Sringfield you want, happy shopping!

I got a Taurus PT1911 when they first came out and it was everything the ads said. Well made, smooth action, good trigger. Only shortcoming on those early ones was the finish which showed wear early on. Finally sold it as I had a SA Custom Loaded and really didn't need two. That being said, those pictures are frightening. First, as has been said, I'd call Taurus and tell them this gun scares you to death you want a NEW replacement. And not just the barrel; if they let that slip by, who knows what other problems there might be. Then, if they replace it, sell it if you want and get a Rock Island Armory 1911. They're less expensive and have as good a customer service set up as you'll find. My son's had one for a couple of years and has fired it extensively. No matter what he feeds it, never a hiccup.

Well I returned it to the store after a little hemming and hawing by the guy in charge.
I got most of the money back minus a 3% restocking fee (can't believe they are going to restock it).
Then I went down to another gun store I hadn't stopped in yet and managed to find a SA mil-spec. Apparently they had just gotten it in last night . So I put that on lay-a-way. I would've bought it outright, but I am sick of having to pay for a background check and my CCW should be arriving soon so I won't have to pay for that.
The only thing I have noticed about the mil-spec that I don't like so far is the safety. So the gunsmith there is going to put in an extended safety after I finish buying it.
